Tell me what you love about Fandom/Wincon

Come one, come all and tell me what you love, why fandom is the best thing. Extra points for why you love the Wincon organizers.

I'll start:
I love that thanks to fandom, I've been able to meet hundreds of new people, to share fic and ideas over thousands of miles in the blink of an eye. I love that I have found people who get me and offer support and love.

Wincon has a special place in my hart. When we went to the first one, we were basically fandom newbies. We had written one story for the most part. We were nervous, because neither of us is very social in person, but we were so looking forward to meeting people who we admired. And what we found was a group of people who welcomed us, who gave us their time and their friendship. And many of them, I'm still proud to call my friends.

One of those is one of our awesome con organizers, [livejournal.com profile] coiledsoul. At the first Wincon, we made the pilgrimage to Nashville proper, and we got tattooed. Every time I see the tattoo on Jess' back, I remember that weekend, and the awesome amount of fun we had. I remember how much I loved spending time with fangirls. I remember tequila and JDM's movie Dead and Breakfast. I remember (of all things) a Christian tattoo shop, and an adorable artist named Colby.

We're planning to drive up to Chicago this October. I can't wait to catch up and have another amazing time.

That first one was a hoot, wasn't it? I loved the morning panels where panel members and audience both already had drinks in hand, the cartoon illustrations, and the terrified scrapbookers who just couldn't seem to figure out who or WHAT we were;) My girls missed karaoke night, but we loved seeing Amos Lee, and we certainly did more than our share for the liquor industry. It was also a treat meeting some of my favorite writers in person. Wish I had time to be in Chicago!

It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I haven't been to a fandom convention, and I doubt if I ever will, but I do go to Scrapbook Retreats with my girlfreinds and we have a whale of a time, so I can imagine the fun you had, and the great memories

I love fandom for all the great ways our love of SPN or whatever is shared! I meet so many awesome folks (you two included big time!) and feel like i belong somewhere!

I too think fandom is generally awesome, and that cons are a way to meet people face to face so that our friendships grow stronger.

Never been to Wincon, and probably won't ever (not that it's bad, it's just not my kind of space) but I do go to other cons and meet people and that's dynamite. (PSSST: will see you at con.txt next month.)

What stands out in my mind about my first Wincon experience in 2008, beyond meeting dozens of new and amazingly awesome fangirls, was breakfast Sunday morning when the pics of Jared & Jeff from the Scream Awards came out and I was enveloped in literal fangirl squee. It was my "I have found my people!" moment and it totally made up for all the hassles with the hotel that weekend, which the Concom deserves major, MAJOR props for putting up with all of those headaches and making sure that we all had a wonderful time regardless.

See you in October! :D

What I love about fandom is that it's given me a [virtual] place to meet friends and people who I love and who challenge me as well as a forum for creativity and squee and contemplation.

What I love about Wincon is that it's a physical place where many of the same things happen. At Wincon, I feel that I am among "my people" more truly than any other time of the year and it helps me to better connect with people I already know online as well as meeting new people. And I appreciate that the Wincon organizers make all of it happen, and that fact that they do it while still seeming to have a good time themselves is awesome.

I love how creative fandom is - and how many cool people are part of it.

I love fandom because some of the best writing being done is being done here. I also don't feel quite so odd when I see than others like the kinds of things I enjoy. Never been to Wincon, (drat!) but I have attended other cons, (actually old enough to have attended some of the first Star Trek cons, sigh, I know...) and I loved meeting new people and discovering all the different ways people celebrate their interests. Some of my dearest and oldest friends I met through fandom and cons.

I've never been to Wincon, or any con for that matter, but I love fandom. I love that no matter what your pairing or kink, whether you like fluff or angst, you're welcome.
