Thursday and I got to sleep in an extra hour and a half, which was lovely. I really love the new bed, so much. I wake up warm and snuggled and without random aches and pains, which is kind of wild. I still have some aches and pains, since I'm going to be 50 in two months (WTF?), but it's much improved.

Right now, the mattress is still on the floor, which does make getting up a challenge, but we'll have a bedframe on Sunday, so hopefully that'll help. Our nightstand is due to come today, so I'll be putting that together, so maybe tonight our water bottle will have somewhere to sit. Also our sound machine.

It's pouring out today, so the lovely people from the gas company are rescheduling yet again. Their 4th attempt will be on Tuesday. I'm going to be working from home, so I am not taking another day off. For those counting, this is the third cancellation. Hopefully fourth time is the charm?

So, I'm debating on trying to tackle building my desk today. My concern is that it's heavy as balls, and could be a bit of a challenge. On the other hand, shiny new desk to play D&D on. Then, I'd begin the hard part of switching my set up to it. Two huge monitors, a docking station, my laptop and my itty bitty desk lamp. Since I'll have more room, I might get a new, slightly larger lamp. This was $6.99 from Walmart, and it's tiny. The light is pretty good, but only covers a small area.

Yesterday was pretty good. I did my and my coworker J's work as he was out, and then I kind of goofed off. Around three thirty, I finally found the guts to tell Former!manager that I hadn't gotten the job. He immediately called me, and we had a nice chat. He says obviously the solution is for him to get promoted and then hire me. Then he got a little more serious, and informed me that he has a side hustle, with a liquor import business. It's been growing and next week, he's going to a big food and wine expo in Paris. In the event that it really takes off, I'll have a job with him. So that was really sweet of him to say and made me feel better. He also agreed that "not having enough confidence" was a bullshit answer, so I appreciated that.

Then, after work, we went out for my consolation dinner at the Melting Pot, which we moved up from Monday. We opted for their Oktoberfest menu, with the exception of the dessert, since neither of us are huge cherry lovers. We started with the beer cheese, which had two big globs of dark Bavarian mustard, garlic, onions and paprika in it. It came with grilled bratwurst, braised short ribs, garlic potatoes, and pretzel bread to dip, and sides of cornichon pickles, sauerkraut and mustard. It was so delicious. I could have ended the meal there and been happy. But no, we'd picked the four course meal, so there was more to come!

Second course was a lovely cesar salad with candied pine nuts. Very tasty. Knowing that there were still two courses, I only ate a little because at this point, I was regretting my hubris at thinking I could eat this much food. Then came the main course! I had duck breast, filet and mushroom ravioli, and Jess had duck breast, filet and garlic pepper steak. We cooked in the Oktoberfest broth, which was a veggie broth with mustard, caraway seeds, onion, garlic and a bay leaf. It may be my new favorite cooking style. Shame they don't have it all year. With Jess' trusty stopwatch, everything was cooked up properly and was devoured with the little tray of sauces they give you. Green goddess is my favorite, followed quickly by the delicious yellow curry (which was excellent with the duck.)

Finally, it was time for our flambeed Banana's Foster chocolate dessert. It flamed up huge, and then they compounded it by shaking cinnamon onto the flames, resulting in "fireworks." It was very pretty, though mildly nerve-wracking. It tasted so good, but we didn't get much past the fruit dippers before we had to tap out. Just no more room in the stomach.

After that, we rolled to our car and up our driveway and into bed, because holy shit that was a lot of food. I'm trying to convince my sister to go next week, but she doesn't think that brother in law will want to. He had pancreatitis last year, and he's been afraid to eat anything since. So, I suggested that she take Jess or I, so she can still have the experience. Or hell, brother in law could watch Dad for two hours and the three of us could go. She deserves to have quality adult time, too.

It was really really nice to go out and have some non-dad time. I think it's something we're going to have to try to plan on more often, because I feel so much less stressed today. It's hard, balancing the worries about Covid with needing to go out, but I think we're going to have to try to figure it out. I'm not saying we immediately dive into a crowded restaurant, but we could go out on Monday or Wednesday when places will be mostly quiet, and go to places like the Melting Pot where the tables are kind of spaced out.

Also of the good, the trazadone they gave me to help me sleep (which, gold star, I love it) is also having more of an antidepressant effect than my doctor seemed to think it would. I've actually started feeling things again. Granted, that means that sometimes what I feel is sad, but it's better than the vaguely muffled numbness.

Okay, I think I've rambled enough. I am going to go forth and maybe put on pants, and look at the directions for my desk and see how hard it's going to be.

Everyone have a wonderful Thursday!

boo! to the gas folks - that's just ridiculous. here's hoping Tuesday works out and you can finally get things connected

but yay! to Former!manager - it could be an interesting opportunity, if his plans pan out

your dinner sounds absolutely fantastic - you should totally try to get back there with your sister. I think the plan of leaving BIL with your dad and the three of you going out is a very sound one.
