12:00.

Jeff glanced at the clock over the stove for the eight-millionth time. It was noon, and he hadn't heard a peep from Jensen. Sure the guy was never a morning person, but this was a little ridiculous.

Everything in him said “go check on him,” but the last thing Jeff wanted to do was imply that Jensen couldn't take care of himself.

Apparently tired of watching Daddy waffle, Bisou got up and trotted down the hall to Jensen's room, nosing open the door.

“Bisou! Don't you dare—Come here,” Jeff hissed.

He would swear sometimes that the damn dog was smarter than him. At the very least, she had the market cornered on stubborn.

She trotted in the room and Jeff started down the hall, hesitating at Jensen's door.

Then, Bisou whined piteously, her 'why won't you talk to me' sound, and Jeff nudged the door open. “Bisou, cut it out. Let the poor man sleep-”

She looked up from next to Jensen on the carpet, the wheelchair tilted onto its side.

“Jesus, Jen! Are you okay?”

The look Jensen shot him could have flayed skin from bone. “I'm awesome. How are you?” He rubbed at his legs,

“You should have called!”

“Oh for Christ's sake, Jeff. I'm not a fucking invalid. I toppled the chair. Whoopee. It's a near daily occurrence. I'll get up as soon as some of the spasms ease up, okay?”

“I could help you-”

“No. I'm fine,” Jensen spat. “Just let me handle it.”

“Jen,” Jeff started.

“Fuck, are you deaf? I thought I was the handicapped person here. Out!”

Jeff clucked his tongue, and Bisou came to his side quickly, following him quietly out of the room.

Jensen didn't come out that afternoon. Jeff waited, wondering what he would say. When darkness started to fall, he turned on his computer and hit the internet.

LJ ate my lengthy response to this. I hate you LJ.

Cliffnote version of my response is:

Oh Jen. I'd hug you, but then you'd accuse me of treating you like an invalid. Poor Jeff is just trying to do the right thing. I'm glad Bisou is there to check in on Jensen without that pesky urge to "respect his privacy."

I also adore the title because that song is just so amazingly powerful. The lyrics alone provoke so many strong images, and the way Johnny Cash sings it is simply amazing. It's a great association to make with this series.

Well, yes. Cause Bisou trumps all. *grin*

I'm glad you like it! (and yes, it's an amazingly powerful song, and kinda says where the series is going, in a nutshell. *grin*)

I'm officially afraid of when you get inspired by "everyone I know goes away in the end ... I will let you down, I will make you hurt."

That's the section of the song that always breaks my heart every single time I hear it. The idea of being completely alone and thinking you deserve it. That you need it in order to protect people.

Aw, Johnny Cash your version of this song just breaks me. The NiN version is also gut wrenching, but there's something powerful about the simplicity of Cash's version.

Thanks for writing! I can't wait for more!
