Thanks to our old man kitty, Sam, I have had almost no sleep. Every so often, he'd pop in and meow at me while climbing up on the bed (and me) to beg for pets. He didn't even want to stay that long. Unfortunately, our door is warped from the flood, and does not shut tight, so we don't really have a way of keeping him out. I love Sam so much, but by 2am, I was not feeling very charitable towards him. I don't think Jess slept too well, either, though maybe a little better than me. I gave up and got up half an hour early, hoping he'd follow me, and let Jess get a couple of hours, but apparently not. Coffee will be a necessity today.

Last night, Jess made Aloo Gobi (curried cauliflower). It was hands down, the best thing I've eaten in months. We used this recipe with a couple of tweaks. We made it in the slow cooker, and just dumped all the ingredients in, and we did two cans of crushed tomatoes and frozen peas. We also used precut frozen cauliflower to make things easier. Jess did have to quarter small potatoes to make sure they'd be tender. It cooked on high for 3 hours, during which it smelled amazing. I'm aware that it probably wasn't horribly authentic, but damn, it was tasty. Two bowls heaped with it, and squabbling over who gets the leftovers tasty. It rocketed straight into comfort food territory.

We're doing Indian week, so today is Chana Masala, which is chickpeas in a buttery Masala sauce. Still technically a curry, but I don't get tired of that. Tomorrow we use the paneer, for Paneer Tikka Masala.

Of course, this is only possible because we've given up on making dinners Dad would eat. Even when we were making straight American food, he wasn't eating it--maybe a bite here or there, and the rest would go to the dog. So, we got him some fish filets and chicken sliders, and pretzel dogs, and he eats whatever he wants, while we eat whatever we want, without worrying about whether it's something he would eat. I offered him a bite of Aloo Gobi, and he made such a face.
