This Bookstore Trip Report is from Danielle Fritz. Danielle is a former librarian who has a special affection for children’s lit and books about the funeral industry. She first cut her criticism teeth as a fanfic writer. A resident of the upper midwest, she’s learned to love beer and tater tot casserole and tolerate long winters. Most nights will find her cuddled up with her pups and wearing out her wrists with yet another crochet project.

I have visited quite a few bookselling establishments over my 30-ish years, but this was my first opportunity to check out a genre-specific bookshop. I follow a number of romance bookshops on social media and as my appreciation for the genre has deepened, I’ve looked forward to patronizing one of these niche shops. Tropes and Trifles in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was a great introduction to what a romance bookseller has to offer.
When I think “romance bookstore,” I envision pastels (especially pink), hearts, and an overall coquette aesthetic. This is not Tropes and Trifles, which boasts high ceilings, white walls, and dark wooden shelving. There’s a cute accent wall behind the register where staff have hung garlands of origami hearts and birds in a rainbow of colors. In one corner you’ll find a comfy purple and white couch with some funky purple wooden chairs, perfect for a bookclub gathering.
I really liked the minimalist approach to design, because it really allows the books to shine. The store is also very neat, with orderly shelves and thoughtfully stocked displays. Overstuffed shelves can be overwhelming to shoppers (especially if you were once a librarian and have to stop yourself from instinctively pushing spines out so they all align against the edge of the shelf).

The majority of titles are from within the last five-to-ten years and they sell exclusively new books – no used titles here. You’re not going to find, say, Lynsay Sand’s entire backlist here, or that one Nora Roberts you read back in 2005, though I am sure if you spoke with store employees they could obtain it for you easily. There’s a lot of BookTok and indie rep. None of this is bad — it’s a smart way of stocking, given the current publishing market, and similar to how Barnes and Noble stocks their own shelves. It’s clear the staff knows the market and is working with it rather than against it.
As an example, just below the registers there is a Heated Rivalry display. Given the publisher’s head-scratching decision not to amp up printing ahead of the show’s debut, it’s difficult to find a hard copy of the now highly-sought-after title. Therefore, there were no copies of Heated Rivalry to be had but a great selection of other hockey romances.
Their stock reflects the market today — big walls of dark romance, romantasy and paranormal, and an especially large contemporary section. YA, historical, and classics all had smaller, but well-stocked sections. In addition to the expected subgenres, there was a “not-quite-romance” shelf full of titles that might feature romance but weren’t romances per say, and a selection of graphic novels. I was delighted to also find non-fiction titles, covering subjects like pleasure, anatomy, civil rights, and abortion. Up front you can find a “MN-Related” shelf, full of books with some connection to the state, and the “Local Authors” section.

My one tiny criticism of Tropes and Trifle’s set-up is the number of staff recommendation cards they have on some of the shelving. There were some sections where there were so many it made browsing difficult, as in hard to see the books themselves. It’s wonderful to have booksellers who are so excited about the titles they have to offer, but the number of shelf talkers on display could be scaled back a pinch.
I’m very much a trinkets girlie, so I had fun browsing the non-book offerings. Beyond the branded totes, tees, and mugs, Tropes and Trifles filled displays with scented candles made by local vendors, themed to certain genres or popular characters. There were fancy locally-made chocolates, handmade book sleeves, coloring books, puzzles, book annotation supplies, cards, and my biggest weakness — stickers. My favorite sticker of the bunch was a cute “Girls just wanna have guillotines.” That was the first thing I picked up to purchase.

I like shopping for books in person, precisely because I can be exposed to titles beyond what my algorithm serves. It can be hard for me to sometimes look past reviews when choosing to pick up a title. I find walking aisles, devoid of the stars and commentary of Goodreads/BookTok/reading influencers, can help me find unexpected treasures. With a neat, diverse, and genrefied collection, Tropes and Trifles is a great place to find a hidden gem.

The day I visited, ICE agents had been especially active in their neighborhood, which sits only a few blocks away from George Floyd Square. Almost every storefront I passed featured a red and yellow sign, indicating that ICE was prohibited from entering that establishment. Citizens stood on street corners, keeping an eye out for ICE activity, whistles and phones at the ready. Tensions are high everywhere in the Twin Cities, but particularly in the neighborhoods where members of the community are being snatched or assaulted by ICE agents.
Tropes and Trifles have a yellow and red sign at the front. On the display beside the register, there is a bowl of whistles, flyers outlining your rights and how to be an observer, bumper stickers, and buttons. While I browsed the shelves, I noted small mutual aid posters beside the Historical section. And as I was checking out, the store clerk quickly offered me a whistle and the other resources they were offering for free. They told me grimly that they’d gotten a lot of experience in being an observer and using their whistle in the last few days.
Last night, while browsing my socials, I saw a post on the store’s Instagram that they will be closed for sales this coming Friday, January 23rd, in solidarity with the strike calling for an end to ICE’s occupation of the state. However, they will be open as a community resource station with coffee, charging station, and a place to warm up.
Now more than ever, we need to stand up for one another. It’s especially heartening to see a business make the effort to support their neighbors, particularly in light of the harassment other stores have faced as a result of their anti-ICE stance. I was excited to visit a romance bookstore, and now I’m excited to continue supporting a local business that has a proven record of lifting up their community.
We stand with Minnesota.
…
Thank you for the trip report, Danielle! If you’d like to write a trip report about your visit to a romance-focused bookstore, I would LOVE to hear from you.

I got out a lot of anger about the fridge and car Thursday evening after work. I used the trench shovel to dig a tunnel to our garbage can because I cannot handle a life with dog and cat poop bags on my front porch anymore. I have an aesthetic to upkeep, and we JUST got rid of the mattress on our front porch. (Not our mattress).
There are some books called Foxfire that I own, they're old stories of Appalachian superstition published in the 70s, that interviews old folks from the turn of the century. In it, there was an entry on planting by the signs and the moon. At first it was a joke when I planted some garlic, but it is now unkillable. I planted some marigolds and rosemary by the moon and they have been growing well. Today was another planting date to keep up the experiment. 4 more marigolds, and summer and winter thyme. I still need to find an image supporting host bc I want to show you all what I'm planting but ... ffhhhh. Is Photobucket still a thing.
We were supposed to get snow today but we didn't which is great bc I am pretty tired of busting ass on the ice skating rink outside my house. Also, my fridge / freezer were magically working again yesterday so I guess I DON'T have to repair that. Yeehaw. Progressive said they'll cover our car repair which is even nicer, I just hate waiting at car shops all day lmao so we will get to that eventually...
My dance workshop was great. The instructor had only been available for one specific day; I found an acceptable space at short notice. I learned some new dances. I'm going to be teaching 15th dances myself later and it helped to get a chance to watch her step techniques and movement.
Fandom: due South Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Ray Kowalski & Ray Vecchio, Diefenbaker, Buck Frobisher, Maggie McKenzie Rating: Mature Length: 26,124 for the main fic, 28,647 for the series Content Notes: Creator chose not to warn. This has at least a hopeful ending, but the fic is about zombies and Ray kills and eats at least one victim, plus there are some slightly gross descriptions in places. Way less gore etc. than most zombie stories, though. Creator Links:mizface on AO3 Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, Friendship, Complete AU, Zombies, (Not really) character death, Epistolary fic
Summary: Ray Kowalski thought he had an okay existence: he had a place to call home, didn't have to worry about a job, and nobody bothered him. If it wasn't for the fact that he was a zombie, things would have been pretty good.
Then he met very much alive Benton Fraser, and his whole world was turned upside down.
Reccer's Notes: And the trifecta of cracky fantasy creatures: zombies. This story's based on the movie Warm Bodies, which also takes the cracky zombie premise kind of seriously, in a romantic way. Zombies are usually shown as mindless ravening hordes, but in this story both Rays have been zombified but haven't completely lost themselves. Here, zombies are called "the infected", and both Rays begin to mysteriously improve across the story, regaining more speech and cognitive ability. Apart from the relationship with Fraser that develops - and we also access Fraser's POV from his journal entries - there's a nice friendship between the Rays. There's one major story, followed by a number of short fics adding to the 'verse. A rather lovely and poignant take on zombies, that more seriously explores a possible at least partial recovery from that state, and developing relationships.
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Katie Brown, David Parrish, Elizabeth Weir, Bates Rating: Explicit Length: 6499 Content Notes: No AO3 warnings apply Creator Links:Hth on AO3 Themes: Crack Treated Seriously, First time, Friends to lovers, Humor, In vino veritas
Summary: Rodney toked pot that one time, but it never made him one of the cool kids.
Reccer's Notes: Okay, I'm stretching it a little thin in terms of the prompt, but any excuse to rec this charming, hot, and funny fic. The cracky premise is that Colonel John Sheppard, the military commander, is the drug czar of Atlantis, and Hth actually does sell it, while still keeping Sheppard in character. I'm very fond of "under the influence" stories, and this is lovely, as Sheppard inveigles Rodney to smoke pot with him and Rodney transforms from a pining nerd to being almost as cool as Sheppard. As so often, they've both been secretly attracted to each other for ages, and a bit of disinhibition (hitting Rodney harder as he's less used to it) speeds things along. It's a favourite story of mine with great dialogue, and a very fun read.

Yay! Thanks to another user here I was able to customize Dreamwidth to be more friendly for my eyes. So I’m pretty happy about that. I might make some more adjustments overtime but I’m glad I at least have my dark background.
Anyways I’ve come to talk about an interesting conversation that I had with my mom about a week ago. Basically we’d just woken up and we were talking about our dreams. I told her that in my dream I was a guy called Mateo and I was driving somewhere with my friend Greg (not an actual friend of mine in real life) and another unnamed friend. My mom was super surprised that I was someone else in my dream. I told her that this happens somewhat often for me and she was even more surprised. I guess she is always herself in her dreams. I thought this was pretty interesting, and now I’m curious about whether anyone else experiences this. So feel free to tell me if you are reading this. We asked my sisters later on that day and my younger sister said she has a similar experience to me.

Rating: Teen And Up Audience Length: 75,126; 132 chapters Content Notes: This is a raunchy parody; a lot of kinks are implied, and characters will be slipping off for papapa in combinations you may not agree with. Expressive and strategically placed use of eldritch glitchtext.

The Untamed universe is exactly the same, except everybody has magical crystals that have a suspiciously familiar messaging system. The story is pretty much the same as the show, except everyone lives!! (so minor changes). or in which Wei WuXian tries his darndest to date Lan Zhan, Jiang Cheng possibly has a aneurysm, Jin ZiXuan is still the most awkward human alive, and Xue Yang makes me write some VERY cursed things. Written in chatfic format! :3
Comments are very much appreciated! ^.^b
Author’s Notes:
Listen, I know the premise of this fic is actually insane, but it somehow works really well. The 'message crystals' they have work on some form of minor telepathy - they don't 'type' as such. That's all the explanation we are getting :3 Format best viewed on a desktop, but it doesn't matter too much I don't think!
On with the show
Reccer's Notes: Despite the author’s disclaimer, I read this just fine on a $10 3G flip phone.
This freewheeling bawdy Muppet Song turned epic saga got a lot of the fandom through quarantine; I admit to shoehorning it into the “serious” category, but an author (who isn’t writing for pay) doesn’t sustain a story through four years and 132 chapters without putting something resembling thought into it; a skeletal outline of the canon plot (with more survivors and a lot more innuendo) remains faintly visible.
Education can never start too early. Which is why I, for one, am happy to see all the things kids are learning from their birthday cakes. You know, things like....
...friendly hand gestures:
And where Spider-Man's web comes from:
Watch it go!
Then there are the helpful anatomy lessons:
I think it's safe to say that Bailey really, REALLY enjoyed his Bar Mitzvah party.
Not to mention the legal drinking age:
Hint: that's not it.
And perhaps the best life lesson of all: one of the hazards of mixing boobs with beer:
Thanks to Sarah G., Anony M., Tanya G., M.M., and Jenae B. for the education.
Fandom: due South Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski Rating: Teen & up Length: 1782 Content Notes: No AO3 warnings apply Creator Links:dance_across on AO3 Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friendship, Humor, Pining, Post-canon
Summary: Ray and Fraser discover that someone's been writing stories about them. Slashy, slashy stories.
Reccer's Notes: This is set after canon, during Ray and Fraser's quest. They've become minor celebrities in the wake of the big submarine/terrorists drama and when they briefly hit an outpost of civilization (a motel with internet), Ray checks his email and finds Frannie's sent him a link to a fanfic someone's written, called "Snowfall in Summer". Hilarity then ensues as they decide to read it together, and it leads to Ray making a big decision. The cracky premise is the existence of fanfic about them, and as far as possible, dance_across shows us how that might actually pan out. In a romantic way, of course, with a hopeful ending! It's a lot of fun.
If you want an immersive reading experience that will absolutely result in a Bad Decisions Book Club event, then this book is for you. Please excuse me while I go read it again.
In this spectacularly imaginative and ghoulishly fun Gothic murder mystery brimming with romance, betrayals, and chills, a fake spiritualist is summoned to hold a séance for a bride who died on the eve before her wedding, but as nefarious secrets are revealed, the line between hoax and haunting blurs.
Be careful what you conjure…
In Victorian London, Genevieve Timmons poses as a spiritualist to swindle wealthy mourners–until one misstep lands her in a jail cell awaiting the noose. Then a stranger arrives to make her a peculiar offer. The Lord he serves, Mr. Pemberton, has been inconsolable since the tragic death of his beautiful bride-to-be. If Genevieve can perform a séance persuasive enough to bring the young Lord peace, she will win her freedom.
Soothing a grieving nobleman should be easy for someone of Genevieve’s skill, but when she arrives at the grand Somerset Park estate, Mr. Pemberton is not the heartbroken lover she expected. The surly–yet exceedingly handsome–gentleman is certain that his fiancée was murdered, even though there is no evidence. Only a confession can bring justice now, and Mr. Pemberton decides Genevieve will help him get it. With his knowledge of the household and her talent for illusion, they can stage a haunting so convincing it will coax the killer into the light. However, when frightful incidents befall the manor, Genevieve realizes her tricks aren’t required after all. She may be a fake, but Somerset’s ghost could be all too real…
A Dreadful Splendor is a wickedly whimsical brew of mystery, spooky thrills, and intoxicating romance that makes for an irresistibly fun and page-turning read.
The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy is $1.99! This is book one in a series. There are renovation elements and enemies to lovers. Have you read this one?
Diana Quincy returns with a steamy affair between an Arab-American woman who inherits a run-down castle in the English countryside and the duke who asserts the castle is his, in the first book in a brand-new Victorian historical romance series.
Anthony Cary, Duke of Strickland, inherits his spendthrift father’s title and can finally restore the family castle to its former glory. But at the reading of the will, Strick is stunned to learn that his father has secretly disentailed him, leaving the family manor–home to twelve generations of dukes–to Strick’s American stepmother. Everyone knows Strick detests the dowager duchess, and when she dies mysteriously, damning rumors start to surface.
When Raya Darwish unexpectedly inherits her glamorous late cousin’s castle in the English countryside, she clashes with the charismatic young duke who insists the castle is rightfully his. The estate is practically bankrupt, so she must find a way to work with the duke in order to save both of their futures.
The two cannot stand each other, but mutual disdain soon gives way to desire. When questions arise about how her cousin died, Raya cannot help wondering if Strick’s sudden unbridled passion for her is part of a scheme to get his castle back…
You’re the Duke That I Want by Lenora Bell is $1.99! I mentioned this one in December 2023’s Hide Your Wallet because I felt like the Bitchery needed to know that a historical romance based on Grease exists. This is book one in the Thunderbolt Club series.
USA Today bestseller Lenora Bell returns with a Grease-inspired rom-com about an innocent lady who clashes with a sexy rake, the first book in a brand-new series sure to delight fans of Sarah MacLean, Tessa Dare, and Julia Quinn.
Raised by an overprotective mother, bookish romantic Sandrine Oliver craves adventure, but nothing exciting ever happens in her sleepy seaside village. Until a handsome, mysterious stranger arrives and sweeps her off her feet…only to leave suddenly with no explanation.
Lord Dane Walker, brother to the Duke of Rydell, is infamous for racing fast carriages and breaking hearts. But when his brother is mortally injured, Dane inherits the responsibilities of the dukedom—duties that come with a dangerous secret which threatens everyone close to him.
In London, Sandrine is astonished to learn that the charming, honorable man she met at the beach is really a disreputable rake. And the infuriating nobleman acts as though he barely knows her.
Who needs a wild rake? Certainly not Sandrine! With a little help from her friends, she transforms into a glamorous belle. She’s out to make Dane pay…but can she stop her traitorous heart from longing to surrender only to him?
Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco is $1.99! This is a horror mystery, I’d say, with a queer, poly romantic subplot. I know that descriptor will perk someone’s ears right up!
Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monsters—this gothic epic fantasy will appeal to fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.
Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.
When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won’t do his reputation any favors. When he’s offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that’s plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice.
It’s one he’s certain he’ll regret.
But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he’s been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

I'm slowly getting more familiar with Dreamwidth. I like looking at the latest things page. I do like how it doesn't take much scrolling to reach the end of the page. Unlike most other platforms where you could just scroll on and on. I'm pretty sure that is called "doom scrolling". I think I have that problem with Reddit in particular. I think I need to get off of there lol. I also think it's super cool how people can customize their journals to express themselves and their personality. I'm not really sure if I'd like to customize mine any. Despite being legally blind, I do have a bit of usable vision, so I do have some preferences. In particular I'd prefer if my journal had a darker background mainly due to my light sensitivity this white color bothers me a bit. But there are so many style options and looking through them is overwhelming. Not to mention it seems that every style has its own layout and I chose this style because I like how everything is set up and I can locate all of the buttons easily. That's one thing I do find a bit frustrating is how every journal I click on I have to learn how to navigate and find where everything is which isn’t super easy when I can’t see the buttons. Like if I find a journal that seems interesting it can take me a very long time to locate the button to subscribe to it 😂.
Now I am going to talk about music. I’m generally not a type of person who makes New Year’s resolutions. Mostly because January is kind of a shitty month and it doesn’t feel like the best time to decide to get my life together lol. Honestly I wish the new year could start at a different time. Which I’m pretty sure in the early version of the Roman calendar it actually started in March until January and February were added later. Spring feels like a better time to start the year. Okay I was supposed to be talking about music not complaining about the calendar. Anyways this year I’ve decided to challenge myself to listen to one new album every week just because it seems fun and I like discovering new music. Yesterday I listened to “Girl With No Face” by Allie X. I’d never heard of this artist before until I heard someone on another platform talking about her and they mentioned that they enjoy this album in particular. I decided to give it a listen and wow I really enjoyed it! One of my most favorite feelings in the entire world is when I’m enjoying a song so much that I can feel it throughout my body. I’m not sure if that even makes sense. It feels like I want to dance, cry, spin, and do weird movements with my hands all at the same time lmao. I hope that does not sound too weird. And then of course I listen to the song over and over and over again. That is how I felt while listening to this album. I really like the singers voice, lyrics, and all of the interesting sounds throughout the album. So yeah I will need to listen to more of her music.
In case you are curious, the other albums I’ve listened to so far this year are: The Fame by Lady Gaga Hidden Vagenda by Kimya Dawson Running With Scissors by Cavetown
Well I think that’s all I have to say. Hope everyone is doing well.
