I went to the Stargate movie with minimal expectations. It premiered in October IIRC, which is not a time for a movie expected to be a blockbuster. But it starred Kurt Russell, who had been a favorite since his The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes days, and James Spader instantly captivated me as Daniel Jackson, and it was a solid fun action film.

Again, I had little expectations for the series. Richard Dean Anderson was just some guy who starred in a show I didn't watch. But it was on HBO IIRC, which I had at the time, and I'll give most sci-fi series a try. Michael Shanks did well as Daniel, Samantha and Teal'c were good characters, and I really enjoyed it until 5th or 6th season or so, and the constant mucking about with the cast members.

I was a little burned out on Stargate SG1 by the time SGA was announced, and seriously contemplated not watching it. But I'd been really amused by David Hewlett as Rodney McKay in his SG1 appearances and decided I'd give it a try. I wasn't immediately grabbed, it was The Storm/The Eye that really made me fall in love with the show and McShep.

Though again, cast changes, and bringing in Jewel Staite as Keller and having her scold Rodney a lot, ugh. But I still loved my McShep and was highly annoyed when SGA's cancellation was announced in favor of SGU. I did watch the trailers for SGU but it seemed dark and depressing and none of the actors convinced me to give it a try. I watched Rodney's one appearance and found the plot stupid, pleased that I hadn't bothered.

The first time I saw an announcement for the reboot, it was either Dean Devlin or Roland Emmerich, TPTB for the movie, who was going to be the showrunner, and they were returning to immediately after the movie, wiping out all the TV history. I still like O'Neill and Jackson as characters, and I can appreciate why someone might like a new start, but this didn't excite me.

The newest announcement is that Martin Gero will be the showrunner. He was involved with the TV show, so perhaps he'd be less inclined to wipe out all that history, but who knows? Anyone might want a clean slate.

So... I feel pretty ambivalent, actually. If a new show brings interest to the previous ones, and new rewatches, residuals for the actors, maybe a new infusion into the fandom, etc., that is excellent, truly excellent. But I'm not banking on General Sheppard making guest appearances, so that diminishes my excitement.

When I have loved Stargate, I have loved it. I rewatch the movie occasionally, those first four seasons of SG1 were consistently excellent, I adore so many of the SGA eps. But it's also definitely had some jaded/yeah whatever, I'll see how it goes reactions from me. I hope the new show happens! I hope I love it! I hope it doesn't wipe out the TV history and we see cameos from many of the previous characters! Fingers crossed!

But, well, we'll see.

Found via [personal profile] asuraid in this post is the following list of reflections:

1) What small joys or sensory details defined this year for you?

2) What is/are your 1-3 favorite photo(s) that you took this year?

3) What self-transformations happened?

4) What did you learn about your own energy, boundaries, and needs?

5) What did you release this year, intentionally or naturally?

6) Which relationships helped you grow?

7) What creative ventures do you want to pursue next year?

8) What do you want to leave gently behind?

9) If you could offer yourself one sentence of compassion, what would it be?

A new comic from Ignite Press by Stephanie Williams, Letizia Cadonici (main artist) and Juliet Nneka (alternate covers.) At the turn of the century, Etta, a young Black woman, studies both science and a book of old remedies she inherited from her mother, along with some dire warnings she doesn't heed.

This is a really interesting historical fantasy with elements of cosmic horror and dark academia. Each issue has alternate covers in very different styles. I like both of them.

I'll be following this one.

Content notes: So far racism is part of the world and why the characters make some choices, rather than violent or constantly present on-page. The rabbits are used in experiments that are not cruel - Etta tests a healing ointment on one that has an injury - but they seem likely to eventually turn into zombies or get possessed by cosmic horrors or merge with eldritch plants.

embedded playlist streaming?

Hi! First time long time.

I'm working on a personal fanworks archive site, and I'd like a section to be devoted to fanmixes, with audio files (that I own locally & would make available to the web server) embedded in a playlist format.

My understanding is that base HTML has fairly robust audio embedding/playing capabilities of its own, but I want to get a sense for whether there are other tools worth looking into, whether because they make for a better music playing experience, easier administration, etc.

I'm interested in any templates, tools, special-purpose themes for a SSG, or just plain tips & tricks that might be relevant for this purpose. Thanks!

Now that we are back in the swing of the year, my days are marked by doctors' appointments. I preferred being outside the calendar. I did dream briefly and unexpectedly of Alexander Knox, playing one of those harrowed, abrasive, obdurate figures on the other side of some internment or imprisonment that made me think he would have been anachronistically great as E. T. C. Werner. Have some link-like things.

1. John Heffernan falls into the category of actors of whom I have somehow become very fond without actually seeing all that much of them, which normally happens with character faces in the '40's. I am unlikely even to see his latest project, the freshly announced Amazon TV version of Tomb Raider, but since his character is described in the promotional dramatis personae as "an exhausted government official who finds himself tangled up in Lara's unusual world," it's nice to know I would almost certainly develop a disproportionate attachment to him if I had the chance. You can tell I am otherwise a solid generation of actors behind the times since I was impressed by the casting all in the same place of Jason Isaacs, Bill Paterson, Celia Imrie, Paterson Joseph, and Sigourney Weaver.

2. This song transfixed me a few nights ago on WHRB: Barbez, "Strange" (2005).

3. I meant once again to praise the Malden Public Library for ordering me a sun-bleached, peach-orange, jacketless first edition of Leslie Howard's Trivial Fond Records (ed. Ronald Howard, 1982), about whose selected nonfiction I have been intensely curious since discovering its existence in 2008, but the problem with reading some of the broadcasts he made for J. B. Priestley's Britain Speaks in 1940 is that one runs into passages like:

Democracy today, to survive at all, must be as militant as autocracy, and what the world is desperately in need of now is not the gentle, philosophic democracy of Jefferson, but the outspoken, militant and ringing democracy of Roosevelt, representing the righteous anger of the free people of the world aroused against the cynical arrogance of the totalitarian feudalists.

People in Iran's capital shouted from their homes and rallied in the street Thursday night after the country's exiled crown prince called for a mass demonstration, witnesses said, a new escalation in the protests that have spread nationwide across the Islamic Republic. Internet access and telephone lines in Iran cut out immediately after the protests began.

The snow did indeed all melt on Tuesday, but this evening we're under Storm Goretti, and it's been coming down good and proper - huge wet flakes, a couple of centimetres in the last hour or so already. We don't seem to have much of the high winds or anything, though; it's been quite peaceful (well, except for Miss H's family, who were driving back from Worcester and are stuck on a road behind some lorries).

Currently in limbo as to whether I'll be in the office tomorrow or not; the forecast thinks it'll keep snowing for a couple of hours but then move towards sleet, and this stuff is so wet it won't take much to melt it. I'll have to see what it looks like in the morning. I've packed everything ready, regardless - although actually I didn't really need to, because the swimming pool has pre-emptively cancelled the morning swim, so I don't need most of it anyway...

The washing machine is behaving itself again. The repairman has broken his ankle and couldn't come and look at it, but suggested something to check; we tried it without any result but then did some laundry to see whether it would cooperate or not, and so far so good! I did four loads yesterday, so the pile is looking much more reasonable.

Life is incredibly quiet and mundane and some day I will finish the November booklog, but mostly things are just... restful, right now. A good way to start the year.

I couldn't get to sleep last night because I had all this health insurance stuff on my mind, so I only managed about 5 hours sleep. I expect to sleep better tonight.

It's a very sunny and mild day today; it was -1°F/30°F when I got up, but by 9 am it was a couple of degrees above freezing. I used the rebounder for about 15 minutes to get myself warmed up and then went for a walk, first to the library to print my letter and then home by a long way so I covered about 5 km/3 miles altogether. It was beautiful weather for walking although there was a slight breeze, and I really enjoyed the walk in spite of almost slipping on a couple of icy bit of the footpath. There's still old snow almost everywhere but the roads are very clear and the footpaths aren't too bad although they have some parts that weren't well cleared and are now icy because of the snow thawing during the day and then refreezing overnight.

At one point I stopped to take photos of the tops of the bare trees against the deep blue sky; I heard someone calling and when I looked around, it was a woman standing in her yard on the other side of the street asking me what I was taking pictures of. I hope she wasn't suspicious that I was taking photos for some nefarious purpose. I often worry when I'm out during the day taking photos for the family photo challenge that people will get upset about me pointing my phone at their yard or their house or whatever. It's better when it's light early and I can go out before most people are up to take such photos. So far I've never been challenged though. I don't think the woman this morning was challenging me, I think she was just curious, because I was obviously pointing my camera up towards the sky. (It was for the prompt "skyline".)
