A Vancouver-based company hopes Canadians look to keep some of their investment dollars local and create an impact — even as the trend of investment dollars flowing south of the border looks set to continue into 2026.

Friday Five by anais_pf

1. You have the summer and plenty of money to travel abroad. Where all would you go?
Well, it wouldn't be in summer, too hot everywhere. Spring or Autumn. Italy, London, Paris, Argentina. I'm not what you'd call an adventurous traveler.

2. What foods would you be sure you got to eat?
All the pasta in the world. Paris bread and pastries.

3. What landmarks would you be sure you got to see?
I want to see the Giotto murals, real badly. Just walking around London, theatre, museums.

4. What airline would you use?
Probably not an American one. Since this is a dream trip, I'm also flying in the first class.

5. Would your knowledge of other languages influence where you went? (i.e., would you be more likely to go to France if you spoke French?)
I know a little French, and I'd quick study some Italian if I'm going.

I read approximately 2 million pages of tax code yesterday. Only 998 million pages to go!

Truth be told, I don't want to read tax code! I don't want to do anything but sit on my fainting couch with my eyes slightly unfocused, thinking strange, dreamy thoughts. It's not as though this coming week is real time anyway, right? The week between Christmas and New Year's is an interstice, kinda like the one between the last chime of midnight & the beginning of a new calendar day. A portal, in other words.

###

Also, played a bit with the Work in Progress. I am writing now about a hospital during the COVID pandemic. I wasn't a nurse during the COVID pandemic, so this is something I know very little about. My imagination is getting a workout. And it's flabby!

Simultaneously, I'm trying to sneak in the Jesus cult. And when I say "sneak," I mean position it under the radar so that when Grazia joins, the reader is surprised—even though all the evidence is there.

Next scene is a telephone call between Neal & Grazia. Of course, they have to banter amusingly. It's surprisingly difficult to write amusing banter off the top of one's head. The call has to include some Mimi backstory, too. Mimi's narrative is breadcrumbs strewn throughout the rest of the novel; she is not one of the main characters. But in the third part of the book (Flavia's POV), Mimi is going to try to kill herself, and that needs to be set up.

A fortnight or so ago, [personal profile] james_davis_nicoll posted 200 Significant Science Fiction Books by Women, 1984–2001, by David G. Hartwell. I had an interesting time skimming it, and then decided that I own a lot of those books and either haven't read them, or read them long enough ago that I don't remember enough of them.

So! I decided to try and read as many of them as possible. And because I like to make life easier for Future Me, I turned it into a StoryGraph Challenge. This challenge has no time limits, and welcomes all comers. I'd dearly like to have other people join the challenge, and read a stack of fascinating books, some by authors who should be better remembered than they are (Bujold, for one, is actually well remembered. Tess Williams, on the other hand, isn't).

How goes the decluttering? Have you shifted anything out of the house? Found something to sort through? Had thoughts on things you can let go of?

Comments open to locals, lurkers, drive by sticky beaks, and anyone I've forgotten to mention.

Congratulations to everyone who has found and/or disposed on any clutter in the last week! I haven't had the oomph to come and post replies to celebrate you, but I cheer each comment notification when I read it.

ps: would anyone like a lowkey challenge for January? I have some ideas...

Harry Longabaugh — better known as the Sundance Kid — is perhaps most famous for his daring bank and train robberies as part of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch. But the American outlaw’s short stint as a cowboy and businessman in southern Alberta is a lesser-known chapter of Wild West history.

I did not go downtown today. Instead I was out shoveling the sidewalk by about 7am. (At least the snow was over so I only had to go out and shovel once.) Pip, sick as he is, was blowing snow (the driveway and walking trails). And then he went up to the garage to plow that out.

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, swept and mopped the dining room and hallway, went for a walk with the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. We had more of the chicken noodle soup for supper.

I read fanfic and watched some HGTV programs. Dr. Pol was my evening background tv. Today I tried the pomegranate tea. It was good, though I was familiar with the flavor because I've had pomegranate tea before when I went to the local coffee shop (that is no longer there). It came in a tin, I think Harney & Sons, or something like that? I looked it up, their Pomegranate Oolong.

Pip had cold sweats this morning and wasn’t able to keep his breakfast down, but he seemed to do better as the day progressed.

Temps started out at 17.4(F) (a whopping 10 degrees warmer than yesterday morning!). According to the ruler I stuck in the snow in different areas, we got about 8" of snow overnight. Thankfully it was not wet and heavy, but even light snow is a pain when you’ve got go shovel 8" of it! Temps reached 25.3.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded pretty good when I talked to her. She’s actually eating more! More being relative. She had some protein drink for breakfast, and some mashed potatoes and peas for lunch. Eating anything solid like that has been a real trial. She was thinking about what to have for supper when I called. One of her friends visited and Sister A called her so she did have some social time.

red ship docked in open water

Often referred to as the one of the last places in the world with year-round sea ice, the waterways around Queen Elizabeth Islands and western Tuvaijuittuq have historically been difficult to access. But in 2025, melting sea ice opened a path for a Canadian research icebreaker to sail through this part of the country for the first time ever.

52/52 for the group 2025 Weekly Alphabet Challenge

This week's theme was: Z is for Zeta

Apparently the Greek letter zeta can also mean 7, so after being stuck for a subject all week, I finally remembered that I use Boots No 7 makeup!

Boots No 7

When I say "makeup", all I use is a tinted moisturiser to tone down my red complexion. It also acts as a sunscreen. Then a light dusting of powder to reduce shine.

And due to the way the weeks are organised, running Sunday to Sunday, there was a week 53.

53/52 for the group 2025 Weekly Alphabet Challenge

This final week's theme was: A and Z

Fortunately I still have the pocket sized London A to Z I used to use on trips to London, so I thought I'd use that to complete the final challenge for the year.

London mini A to Z

I keep track of the photos I've taken in a spreadsheet and this year was a good one regarding taking on-topic photos. There were only three weeks where I didn't take a photo for the topic and in those weeks I did include an off-topic photo in my album, though obviously I didn't share it with the group.
