Work/life overall: Usually before a seasonal crunch starts at Dayjob I think to post something to the effect of "I'm about to be swamped, so while I'll probably/hopefully manage to keep up with reading posts, commenting will probably be mostly nonexistent, etc. etc.", and sometimes I feel a bit silly about it because I'm not as active a commenter as I'd like anyway and sometimes the crunch isn't that bad, and probably most people reading this already know that anyway...but I have some newer mutuals here now and I didn't think to post it, and friends, this crunch is CRUNCHY. Ohboy.

Media intake: LOL. (Okay, I did actually read a couple volumes of manga last night, and I did show ep. 1 of Heated Rivalry to [personal profile] scruloose last weekend. But I think that's it.)

Weather: We did get lots of snow early in the week, but somehow yet again didn't lose power. No complaints!

Cats: Last week both of the blues had birthdays! Yona turned four on Tuesday and Sinha turned five yesterday. (It would be very convenient to have a pic of the two of them together that'd make a good icon, but the odds of that ever happening are not remotely good. Have an icon of baby!Yona.)

In just under an hour from the time of this post (at 08:00 Sunday Morning Pacific Time) Squidge Images will go down for an upgrade.

No official ETA on when it will be back up, but hopefully this afternoon.

Need a reminder why? Read the original post.

A bit more of this and this. Shane's POV this time:

Shane sighed, pinched the bridge of his nose, and turned away from the glass before he could be tempted to touch his neckcloth again. The small sword hanging at his side slapped against his thigh at the sudden movement, and Shane sighed again.

The court sword had belonged to his grandfather and was an elegant little thing, with its faceted and burnished hilt, and swirl of gold along the narrow blade, but a world away from the substantial and trusty sabre that Shane had carried into battle with him not so very long ago. He wondered if the sword had seen action - gentlemen had dueled with just such weapons in his grandfather's day - but even if it had, he could not view it as anything but a beautiful, gilded toy. It was at one with the rest of his get-up this morning, formal court dress in strict adherence to the regulations laid down by the Lord Chamberlain. While his court suit had a certain military style to it, with its long-tailed blue coat and high standing collar, no true officer's uniform had ever been so lavishly embroidered, or paired with old-fashioned knee breeches of velvet, silk stockings and shiny-buckled shoes.

He felt ridiculous.

"That's 'Major Jackass, sir,'" he drawled right back.

I feel like we need to start with this, because I'm runnning into situations where people have clearly not internalized one of the most important things to remember about stochastic parrots that they are calling Avian Intelligence. It's all based on vector maths and probabilities. It does not know what is true, nor what is accurate, when it is constructing what word to select next. That it manages to get things correct is by accident, and by the providence of having training data that contains the correct information in it. When it constructs sentences and so on, it does so based only on what the training data and the vector math, with some fuzz factor built in, says the next word is, regardless of whether that's the right word or not. (Admittedly, being able to do the vector math is helpful, because it allows for a certain amount of synonym substitution and can make a search engine more robust at finding relevant answers if you don't hit the exact keywords. There's an aside here about how many engines are transforming your queries so that you search for things that will serve you ads or that will steer the results to prioritize those who have paid for top search engine ranking, such that even things that are good that come from machine learning are then transformed to evil purposes by capital and their priorities.)

Also up top, Dreamwidth is recruiting volunteers who would be willing to file documents in United States courts talking about the chilling effects on your speech and online activity that various state laws trying to curb social site use by teens would have, and especially from parents who would be willing to detail the way those laws would interfere with your parenting decisions. Comments screened, signing up is not committing to writing such declarations. Also, risks involve things like having to use your wallet name, and possibly having your wallet name and your Dreamwidth identity linked in publicly-available court materials or at least materials available to the state and the court.

(Because South Carolina is the latest entity to join the circus, South Carolina users are especially helpful right now, but all kinds of states have legislation that's looking to join the circus. Why South Carolina? Well, they're charging people with "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" by being an identified adult in a teen-focused anti-ICE school walkout planning chat and expressing support for the walkout. Among other things they're trying to do to supposedly protect teens from the corrupting influence of adults.)

The worry about the presence of new media is perennial and perpetual, but it's not the new medium, or the new screen, that is the issue, it's the way that content is designed and presented that's trying to fragment attention and deep thinking. Accessibility and multimodality are awesome things, but there's a lot of design work that's been put into keeping us scrolling and viewing ads rather than using our tools to think and engage deeply.

Dr. Gladys West, whose precise measurements of the planet made it possible for the Global Positioning System network to come into existence, and therefore commercial (and military) satellite navigation, has died at 95 years of age. Another contribution of painstaking measurment and mathematics that undergirds so very much of the technological world today.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson, civil rights activist and occasional punchline of a joke, has finished his ministry at 84 years of age.

What Have the Fools, Grifters, and Bigots Been Up To This Time? )

New Fandom Add-Me for Winter/Spring 2026

springsodas: (Default)
[personal profile] springsodas posting in [community profile] addme_fandom

Name: Soda (she/her)
Age group: Zillennial; too young to consider myself a 90s kid, just old enough that I remember most of the 2000s
Country: United States
Subscription/Access Policy: Journal is SFW; any posts that contain potentially triggering content (ex: blood) will be put under a read more. I prefer to interact with users who are at least 20 or older, and will avoid interacting with minors.

Main Fandom: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003, IDW, Splintered Fate, and the embryo that is my fan iteration)
Other Fandoms/Interests: Pokemon, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, The Sims (2 and 3; I refuse to touch 4), Stardew Valley, "cozy" games, RPGs, platformers, and strategy games, anime, cartoons, comics, manga
Fannish Interests: Fanart, fanfiction, OCs, character design and development, compiling lore, collecting merch
OTPs and Ships: Although I technically still enjoy the act of knocking two characters of my choice together and making kissy noises, I prefer not to describe myself as a "shipper" but merely someone who enjoys exploring the occasional romantic relationship every now and again (because even I admit romance is overrated and there is plenty of joy in exploring friendships and familial relationships, too.) If I do feel like doodling a bit of romance, it's mostly OC x Canon these days.

Other Info

  • Officially diagnosed autistic, possibly ADHD as well. Recovering smartphone addict.
  • I do fanart, currently am trying to get back into writing fanfic. I'm also planning to debut as a PNGtuber on March 21st.
  • Besides fandom things, my journal is mostly the various happenings in my life, as well as any thoughts, feelings, and other ramblings that come to mind.
  • Just be kind and respectful and I'll do the same for you.
(Homophobes, transphobes, racists, ableists, and other bigots will be blocked, no exceptions. Same applies to pro-GenAI users/supporters.)

Taking my shot

So along the lines of you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, I'm sending in my Overlook story in a few minutes as soon as the submission form opens. I had thought I'd titled and formatted this and had a cover letter.

I didn't.

I searched everywhere but all I had was the edited copy but nothing else.

Huh. Mentally breaking the lenten promise of not talking bad about myself.

So no science saturday today because I had to spend hours, formatting, title conjuring (which I hate and I was SURE I had a title for this and that ELD had liked it but neither of us remembered what that was) and making the cover letter.

Weirder, the online places I saved for this no longer had links to the form. To the open call yes but only as a secondary source. I KNOW I had the link to the main source. I did finally find it googling around but damn. It's like this is cursed.

I know I don't have much of a shot not with all the big name horror in this thing already but there is a tiny chance and I'm taking my shot. Say a little wish for luck for me. thanks

Otherwise today was...disappointing because it was beautiful and I wanted to hike and had no one to go with so I didn't (to be fair to myself it would have been insanely crowded) Heck even Jackson was so crowded I had to cut thru housing plans just to keep moving to where I needed to be.

Mom sensed I was depressed today (and funnily enough she had sent me a witches ball set in Weirton this coming October)

Also had a weird dream that my former coworker L was yelling at me for not picking up my phone and I said it was off and I didn't realize it. Why? Your mother keeps calling me. Your father is in a coma. Mom doesn't have L's number and dad is fine just fyi. Thanks for more nightmares brain

1. We walked up to the bagel place this morning for breakfast and, in addition to my bagel, I got their passionfruit matcha latte again. It's really good!

2. I got a new corner shelving unit for the garage and put it together today. I meant for it to go in the corner between two of Carla's CD shelves, since something needs to go in that space, but it turned out to be too large. The shelves can be moved out a little from where they are now to allow something larger between them, but if they're moved enough to make space for this, it'll block an outlet on one side and either go further behind the couch on the other side than I'd prefer or we'd have to move the couch further down (which could be done but idk I like it where it is). But there is another corner that also needs something and it looks perfect there. That's the corner where we had the Christmas tree, but there's still plenty of room to put the tree there again even with the shelf in place.

3. It was very warm today so we decided to go to Disneyland for dinner rather than breakfast or lunch, and it was the right choice. It was actually very pleasant in the evening.

4. Yet another cat enjoying the new lounger.

Last night, I logged off work and got into bed for a proper nap, none of this half-assed falling asleep on the couch business, and I thought I'd set an alarm so it didn't go more than an hour or so, but it turns out that all I did was open up the clock/alarm app on my phone without setting it, so I woke up at 8:30 pm all befuddled. I decided at that point that fuck it, we ball sleep, so I brushed my teeth, changed into my jammies, and went back to bed. And slept pretty well! I woke up once or twice but had no real trouble getting back to sleep, and then I woke up for good around 7:45 am, so it was like a FIFTEEN HOUR night. Which is bonkers, but I guess I needed it?

Anyway, I did a very small recs update today for February:

[personal profile] unfitforsociety has been updated for February 2026 with 7 recs in 3 fandoms:

* 5 Heated Rivalry and 1 Heated Rivalry/Sesame Street crossover
* 1 The Pitt

Maybe once I finish my DCC reread, I will get back to reading more fic, idk. It's just very hard to pay attention to anything these days, thanks to *gestures* everything.
