I was up early today. Earlier than I needed to be at least. I woke up to the sound of jingly toys in the basement outside our room, and that was it. I laid there for a while, listening to Boodle trying to lure us out to play with her with the power of cute. Eventually my bladder won, and I got up and played with her mousie for a little while, then went upstairs to make coffee and try to get ready for the day.

Today should be a nice, relatively boring day. I've got my normal markets, plus the project Sam sent me to work on. Which by now, three days later, should be out of control, oh joy. I'd say that at least I wouldn't be bored, but oh no, I can totally be bored doing this.

Yesterday was pretty good until the very end. Didn't do a whole lot, took a brief nap, got an adorable postcard from the lovely [personal profile] dine watched some of Hocus Pocus and played Monster of the Week. This one was a horror themed haunted house.

First up, a teenager called the group for help, stating that she found them via a tiktok. They look it up and sure enough, a person they saved in an earlier case is now making tiktoks about their exploits. Deciding to shelve that for a moment, they agree to help her stupid friends, who have decided to check into the Hereafter Hotel, a ghost themed hotel with a grizzly past. "No one comes back from there1"

They do some research and quickly find that much like the Lizzy Borden House, this is a ghost-themeed hotel. The guests are given ghost hunting equipment and invited to scour the house, looking for proof of the unquiet dead.

They arrive at check in, and are shown to the penthouse, the site of the most recent murder. In the 80's, a teenager was stabbed to death by his mother's knitting needles. His ghost is one of the attractions of the house, along with Carrie, a child ghost who darted back inside to get her teddy bear, when her family was on their way to church, and was never seen again.

Almost immediately upon checking in, and with the help of a nice edible, Athena opens her mind and finds a secret room nestled next to the penthouse. It's a control room for everything in the house. Cameras, individual HVAC control, an electromagnet to make the EMF meters go off, speakers to broadcast infrasound.

They also meet a demon bear who stalks them until Elena mentions little Carrie, whereupon he slinks away sadly.

Soon after, they decide to do a seance in the lobby, calling in the child. Carrie turns out to be pants shittingly scary, and Athena has to bolt. Carrie is calmed down, and tells them her story of woe. There were people chanting, then a demon, then she was eaten. Her teddy bear, who she calls "Puppy" tried to save her, but to no avail.

Suspecting that Carrie might have been a practitioner's child, Jasper calls his family, and quickly finds that Carrie's family are old friends. Practitioners are functionally immortal. Jasper calls her family, who explain that this was the work of the Children of Darkness, a cult led by Harper Matthews. The Wizard's council tried to kill her, but when that failed to take, they bound her and her chief rival, a black magic preacher to their respective homes. Turned out that Kerry the owner of the hotel is none other than Harper Matthews. They recommend talking to aforementioned preacher, one Dexter Hill.

He immediately clocks Ash as a divine who is holding a holy weapon, and suggests that this could definitely kill an unholy creature such as Harper. And if Harper dies, he'll be free to move about the city. Jasper is thrilled at this, because if his uncle Archibald sent him to talk to Dexter, then Dexter must be okay.

In the meantime, back at the house, Elena is searching the houses library, which is an esoteric collection ranging from concerning spellbooks to ghost stories by local authors. Athena finds Kerry/Harper and flirts, deciding to stick with her, talking about reading about demon cults in this very hotel.

Harper keeps a straight face, but there's definitely an eye twitch. She recovers and enthusiastically declares that they should try to summon a demon tonight! She describes the book that she knows is around here somewhere, and Elena immediately pokes it behind some other books.

Harper starts pulling out books, looking behind them and Elena palms the book, trying to hand it off to Athena to hide. The sneaking goes well, until Athena botches the handoff and the book drops to the floor.

In the meantime, Maggie is watching over the house, when she realizes that one of the teenagers is missing. She relays this, and Athena reluctantly hands over the book, saying that she can't summon a demon dressed like this! And goes to look.

A minute later, the teenager picks the lock to the penthouse and bursts in, wanting to see the actual murder site. The spirit of the teenager manifests and throws a ball from the pool table before trying to possess the teen. Maggie quickly traps him, and tries to get the living teenager to go away. This doesn't work. Then, his friends come up and all goggle at the real dead ghost. But they have bigger fish to fry. There's a demon summoning to attend. At this point, the whole team has converged, and Elena convinces them that they have time to go out on the lawn, because there's going to be a big manifestation there. Then, they lock the door and magically bar it, keeping the bystanders at a minimum.

Then the crew goes to confront Kerry. To release the child ghost, they have to allow the summoning then kill demon and practitioner. Eventually this is accomplished. Apparently, feeding Harper to her own demon is also effective for killing her. Ash then takes their flaming sword and decapitates the demon, finishing the job.

Little Carrie is reunited with her Puppy, and moves on into the afterlife. Dexter is no longer bound to his church (I'm sure this won't come back to haunt the team.) the wangsty teenage ghost has disappeared and the teenagers were filming the entire summoning from the big dining room windows. It's already been put on tiktok and instagram.

Athena quickly confiscates their phones and pulls down the videos, but that goat is done fucked.

Next up, how does the team deal with their growing popularity. Maggie managed to deprioritize the tag, but new Videos are popping up daily from the myriad of people they've helped.

We closed there, having had a lot of fun.

Tonight, we shall have what will most likely be the final session of Wlid Beyond the Witchlight.

Of course, after a good day, something shitty had to happen. I was getting dad's stuff ready for bed, and noticed a fair amount of blood in his urinal. Awesome. So, we're starting him on antibiotics, and if there's no improvement by Monday, I'll be calling his doctor. He'd been complaining about back pain a couple of days ago, so I'm assuming a little infection. He doesn't have any other symptoms, but it will worry me until he's back to normal. UGH. Why can we not get a week of peace?

Oh well. Time to get ready for work. Everyone have a good Sunday!
