I am so tired this morning. I slept til 7, but I didn't get to bed til late because of D&D, so I am a little woofled. I've had my first cup of coffee, so hopefully that improves soon.
Not a whole lot going on today. I've gotta wake up some, and then work some more on my game for Monster of the Week. Yesterday was mostly spent planning some tactics for D&D, so I didn't get much work done on it. Fortunately, I know what the players want to do, I just have to throw some obstacles in their way and let them go to town. It's kind of funny, because in D&D, I'm working from a pre-printed module, yet it seems like that has more prep time then MotW, where I'm homebrewing pretty much everything.
Especially this week, when I was prepping for the boss battle, I put hours of time into leveling the BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy) just right for our party, and picking spells that he could use for best effect. Then, there was a wizard character that I had to create from scratch, just in case the BBEG needed a little more firepower (he didn't). Also, the BBEG was a warlock, which is a class I knew very little about. So I did a quick tutorial, followed by figuring out spells for him, and making sure I knew what the spells did.
The result was pretty cool. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, and were in jeopardy. I reduced three people to single digit hit points, and if not for our paladin's aura of protection, one of our rogues would probably have gone down.
The fight started out with said rogue the only one in range of the BBEG. He put a hex on her that increased the damage he did on attacks and let him teleport near her. Then cast a spell to armor himself up. He got extra hit points, plus when a player first attacked him they automatically took 25 points of damage. It took a couple of rounds where the party had to catch up, though the spellcasters were able to take some hits, and then the melee started in earnest. BBEG cast circle of death, dealing 32 points of damage to everyone. The party got creative with their spells, casting dissonant whispers, causing him to flee for a turn (this may have saved a few people's lives.) As he fled, a demon disguised as a duergar showed up and threw fire at the party. The cleric, thinking quickly, banished the demon. The fighter and paladin beat on the BBEG. The BBEG casts cone of cold for 36 more points of damage. After a long fight, the rogue who nearly died got the final stroke that did the BBEG in.
Then, it was time for exploring. A wizard appeared, but was quickly convinced that fighting was not in his best interest. They did encounter two mind masters, who died without getting off a single hit. Then, they found treasure! So much treasure. They already have a ton of treasure, but more is always appreciated. We closed the night there, with another level to clear and possibly another 8 duergar to fight.
Okay, off to get more coffee and try to wake up.
