Date: 2009-06-08 08:08 pm (UTC)I'm looking for Japanese language (phonetic pronunciations),
plus, some culture. I'm looking at a weirdass futuristic romance that happened to pop into my brain during a migraine flare that had me up in the wee hours of the morning.

Date: 2009-06-09 01:56 pm (UTC)if you want a decent Japanese language site (e.g. dictionary, kanji/character dictionary, names/places, etc.) www.nihongoresources.com is not bad and it gives links to other Japanese language sites.
for a random pop cultural site www.pinktentacle.com is pretty fun (and despite the name, it is not a porn site). there are so many Japanese cultural sites out there, that you might have to be a little bit more specific in what you want.
in terms of pronoucing Japanese, it's pretty easy as words are generally pronouced the way they are transliterated/romanised. um, so the way you say a mora (smallest unit of sound, similar to a syllable e.g. society = shakai = sha-ka-i = 3 moras) or a letter will generally not change regardless of its context. I hope that made sense.
for example, you want to ask what is your name - お名前は何ですか[tranlitered into: onamae ha nan desu ka]
it's pronouced as oh-na-mah-eh wa [this is a special character, it is generally spoken as 'ha', but in other caes as 'wa'] na-n de-su [most ppl tend to slur 'su' so de-su becomes des] ka.
I hope this helps, and hasn't made it more confusing.
