I have no idea what I did to my neck yesterday, but oh crap it hurt. Today is much improved.
After the latest fandom kernuffle made me headdesk this weekend, it got me thinking about fandom as a whole, and why I bother with it.
I came to the conclusion that I love fandom because for every crappy experience, or every trip to fandom wank, for me, it still gives more than it takes.
Case in point: Metallica fandom. Took/caused: Stress because of listmums arbitrary rules. Nearly cost friendships due to stupidity. Pissed me off to no end by hurting people I love. If fandom wank had been around back then, would have landed me on it repeatedly due to flame wars from hell. (though, to be fair, if I have a good opponent, I kind of like arguing. It makes me happy when I'm in a bad mood.)
Gave: A deeper friendship with my Roo. Friends who I still adore in
hederahelix,
kimannebb and
ctbn60. Some hella awesome fic from the above people. And a brand new friend, in my flame war opponent,
robanybody.
*grin*
So yes. Fandom still rocks. And my little corner of it is the bestest ever.

Date: 2008-06-11 02:50 am (UTC)Wow, I am so out of it. Every fandom I have belonged to has been full of really nice, encouraging people. I've never once been flamed (and that isn't an invitation or a temptation of fate, I swear). About the closest I come is one of the network fan forums for Supernatural here in Australia - you quite often have people go in and crap all over the show, or rant about what someone else has posted. You're right, it's not nice, and I rarely go there anymore. Who has time for that kind of thing?!?
I'm glad it hasn't turned you off fandom. :-) My purely selfish motives for that include certain unfinished fics that shall remain nameless... ;-D And, to be honest, people like you inspire people like me.
