Nov. 3rd, 2023

Last day of class! I've just got this day at the backup center, learning the phone system, and then Sunday, the reall work starts! The backup center where we'll be for the first few weeks is in the middle of nowhere, seriously. We share a parking lot with the Sheriff's office, and there's maybe three stores nearby. I'm going to have to figure out my lunches, because I'm not going to have anywhere to stop. There's literally a Dunkin, a Subway and a little sub shop. That's it.

I'm spoiled, because the main center is just outside of one of the county's two biggest cities, with all the choice that implies. (I mean, it's a small county, so we're not talking NYC here. It's a small city, but it's got some decent restaurants.).

Mind you, I'm also spoiled with the hour lunch they've been giving us. As calltakers, we have no scheduled lunch. It's just an "eat while you can" situation.

I can't believe that I'm done with the academy classroom. It was weird leaving yesterday and realizing that I wouldn't be coming back there until it was time for dispatch academy in 9 months or so. It kind of boggled my mind.

I got my official schedule for November, and I am imdeed working Thanksgiving day. This makes me incredibly happy. For the Emergency Medical Services system, our holidays work a little strange. If you work on a normal holiday, you get double time. If you don't work a holiday, you get paid regular rate, just like the office workers. But then, there's four "Super Holidays" (New Year's Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas). If you don't work, you get paid for 8 hours. If you do work, though, you get triple time. I'm not attached to holidays, so I am more than happy to work all of them. I did the math, and for Thanksgiving, I'm going to make $612, just for the day. I can deal with that, and we can get our turkey on Friday (when I'm getting paid to be off).

That is going to be a lovely paycheck.

Okay, want to get myself together a bit early, since I've only been to this place once, and that was in bright daylight. Not sure how it is driving in the early morning dark. I know I need to watch for deer. Everyone have a perfect Friday!
