It's Saturday! I have a meeting about beginning the transition for my new CONfab position at 1, but aside from that, nada. I'm sure I'll end up having restlessness and be driving myself up a wall, but for now, it's a lovely day, the coffee is brewing and it's not my day to deal with the pain in the ass.

Of course, my sister wasn't able to get off from work early, so it was just me going to watch his therapy yesterday. When I got there, he was in a mood, because no one had gotten him dressed yet. Lunch was not too his standards. His taco was "too spicy" and it had rice. Which he has a vendetta against. I got him some peanut butter crackers instead, and we waited for therapy.

His therapy was minimal. With the use of a assist machine that gives him something to grab onto, he can haul himself upright, but he can't stay for very long. He definitely can't take steps, so transferring is going to be tough. Getting out of the wheelchair is very difficult for him, so we're going to need to minimize that. All in all, it was worse than I was hoping, but slightly better than I was afraid of.

We've got a lot to do in a week, that's for sure. Therapy (and I) is a little dubious about him coming home. They're afraid we're going to hurt ourselves. I mean, I won't lie, that's a possibility. But with my sister in denial, he's coming home. I'm honestly more concerned about what a dick he was to the therapists. They indicated that he was on good behavior, but I still felt like he was being a little jerkish. I am going to have to make it 100% clear that it's not going to fly at home.

I got home around 2:30 and was just wiped out for a while. There were three therapy people and that was more socializing than I was prepared for.

Eventually, I chilled out, just in time for our Call Of Cthulhu game!

The hours leading up to this one, I was nervous as hell. This was entirely homebrewed for the CoC system, using another person's homebrewed D&D monster. So basically, I used the concept for the monster and built a game around it from scratch.

There's a creature in D&D called the False Hydra. It's a nightmarish creature with a large center mass, thick necks, and multiple skull like heads. It has a song that makes you forget about it and it's victims. As it eats (people, of course), it grows more heads and its song gets stronger, and covers a wider area. I've been thoroughly fascinated with how this urban legend of a creature has grown in the D&D community, and reading about some of the cool and amazing games they've run with it.

I've wanted to run a Hydra game for a while, but I know some of my regular players wouldn't be into it, so I waited. I did one in my MotW game awhile back, but I didn't feel like that game hit the hydra's full potential. So, i waited. And lo, I decided to try Call of Cthulhu system. The game system is about cosmic/eldritch horror, so the players who weren't into horror chose not to play. We played a test game, and I really enjoyed the system, so I decided it was time.

CoC is traditionally set in the 1920s, but I decided to go with a little more updated setting. The 1980's in Strasburg, PA, a town outside of Lancaster that I've visited multiple times.

I updated the monster, as the D&D version does insane amounts of damage, and CoC isn't set up to be a combat system. There is combat, but it's usually very short and somewhat fatal. Since I didn't want to kill my players outright, I wanted to give the creature weaknesses that would allow for non-combat options.

In the end, my players came up with the best, most diverse group of characters, and the game went (I feel) pretty well. They were creeped out, and then anxious about the lost memories, and then eventually triumphant. As with any campaign of mine, there's a plot hook there should I come up with more things to torment my players with and people should be interested in playing it.

Okay, I'm going to go get some more coffee and try to wake myself up. Have a good Saturday!
