2007, you are so on notice. I've just about had it with you, year. And we've barely gotten started. Shape up, immediately, got it? Stop picking on me and mine.
Whining ahead, fair warning.
So, we've got the crappy primary care doctor of doom. Working for a doctor, I tend to treat myself for small things, and for big things, I go to the appropriate specialist. I went to her for a physical last year, she seemed to be okay. *shrug*
This year, when I went with Jess, she seemed less thrilling. She didn't think Jess needed any tests for her migraines, just gave her imitrex pills. Problem with stuff like imitrex is that it has to be taken at the onset of a migraine. Jess tends to wake up with them in full-force. At that point Imitrex is basically useless.
I called her for Jess on Tuesday, because I'd found some info on a nose spray that looked promising for Jess' type of migraines. Called at 8:30 a.m. Called back at 3:30 pm, after Jess called, to say she was going home early with a vicious migraine. Finally got a call-back at 4:45, she was calling in an oral med, called Midrin.
I picked it up, and it did help a little. Jess was able to sleep and felt a bit better. So, yay!
Got up yesterday, and the migraine was back. Took the Midrin, and nothing. She had PT, so we headed off for that, and she started puking in the car. Said fuck this, and went to the GBMC ER. Four hours and an iv of Reglan later, she felt better, went from a miserable little ball on the table to a little sleepy drooling ball on the table.
Went home so she could sleep and by nightfall she was migraine free. Now have a happy prescription for Reglan as well. Hopefully, that'll hold her until the Neuro appointment in March. *nod*
Of course, now I'm the one with the headache, and the stiff neck. *shrug* But I'm glad my baby's better.

Date: 2007-02-08 05:22 pm (UTC)I hope that Jess's appointment is different though and they can find a reason and help her make them less frequent, and less intense. Here's hoping the rest of Feb. is better for you guys.

Date: 2007-02-08 05:31 pm (UTC)I'm not saying you're wrong about Imitrix, that it's only good at onset, Sonya told that to me too from her doctor. My experience has been that Imitrix INJECTION works anywhere in the migraine cycle. I always take it as a last resort. Each form: tables, nasal spray and injection I've tried with different results. Only the injection works for me.
pills- worked once then never again. Gave me mild chest pain for 2-3 days later.
nasal spray- worked once, made me regularly so nausous (and puke once) I refused to use it again.
injection - works about 95% of the time. Takes the migraine down instantaneously! Side effects suck. They include panic attack, room spins and nausea. Because of this I wait until my migraine is *killer* and I'm considering the emergency room when I take it. Side effects last for 45 min (for me) practically to the minute. Sonya said her's lasted 5-15min. Doctor said it was an "epinephrine" effect. Leaves me humorless and a bit of zombie for 24 hrs BUT I've preferred it over being a huddle miserable ball with no relief. Allergist recommended the injection from his expereince in ER. They said they also gave them ibuprophen 800mg at the same time. Sometimes I use that combo too. The injection is like an epi-pen which is the only reason I use it. I can't stand watching needles go into skin *shudder*
Midrin- never worked well for me and gave me room spins on top of the migraine.
Out of the 4 nuerologists I've seen, and 3 gps and how ever many nurses, drs and ER workers I've seen in the last 10 years, my allergist was the most knowledgeable and helpful about migraines and medicating them. My PT is the most knowlegable about explaining and discussing the physilogical response to migraines.
For me and my next door neighbor, key was/is getting our alignment of our back and neck. Pain, book reading, computer staring causes peoples heads to come forward over their body. This changes muscle tension, cranial rythm, and blood flow to head. These things create an environment ripe for migraines. Couple a 1 or a few triggers (weather changes, food triggers, etc.)

Date: 2007-02-08 08:32 pm (UTC)Her PT is working on the posture thing, trying to get her neck loosened up enough that she can stand straight.
But for now, I'm just glad that the Reglan helped.

Date: 2007-02-08 10:46 pm (UTC)That sucks sweetie. For Jess, and for you. Here's hoping she can get things settled enough that the March appointment helps with something, anything.
WHy is when you find a good doctor, they're really good, and when you strike a bad one, they really suck?
