+ Two days into the new year, two episodes into season 1 of The X-Files. I know we all agree Gillian Anderson is hot stuff, but are we talking about it enough?? Also, I remember being very annoyed at Scully's reluctance to believe in the supernatural as the show went on, given how much she'd experienced by then, but WOW does she have the patience of a saint in the beginning. Mulder is lucky he's cute. Also also, they really did smoosh these two together like a pair of dolls they wanted to kiss right from the start. Shippers must have been eating the wallpaper by episode five.

Can't wait for less UFOs, more bizarre horror cases.

+ Went to the local mall with my mom today, and I am now the proud owner of a 50% off memory foam pillow. Fingers crossed I vibe with it.

+ While my mom was looking for things for her calendar, I happened to spy a shiny new hardback of Mona Awad's Bunny, with funky pink bunny endpapers and sprayed edges. And so, silly me, with the goal of reading my damn physical books, came home with yet another physical book. Le sigh. At least I'm 98% sure I will vibe with this book something fierce.

+ Just did the final tagging for the last check in post of [community profile] rec_cember. I'll be tallying the recs and fandoms covered tomorrow but spoiler: it's A LOT. If you're looking for something to read, I highly recommend having a look at the tag set. We got a really good variety.

+ Stranger Things has finally ended. I feel like they yanked Nancy out of the fic I recommend a couple of days ago and shoved her in there, and that was endlessly amusing. I just sat there squinting at it for a minute, going full headtilt. They very much indulged in a lengthy wrap-up that some will hate and others appreciate very much *cough* fandom *cough*. The final battle was extremely 80s. Also, what was the costuming department smoking? I am saving this quote for later. )

If you’re the sort of person who nominates stuff for awards, this year I have a number of works available for your consideration. For the sake of convenience I’m using the Hugo Award categories to lump them together but these classifications should work generally for the various awards my work is eligible for. All of these works were made publicly available between Jan 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025.

BEST NOVEL:

When the Moon Hits Your Eye. March 2025. Published by Tor Books, Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Editor.

The Shattering Peace. September 2025. Published by Tor Books, Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Editor.

BEST SERIES:

The Old Man’s War series, published by Tor Books, of which The Shattering Peace is the latest installment.

BEST NOVELETTE:

3 Days, 9 Months, 27 Years. November 2025. Published by Amazon Original Stories, John Joseph Adams, Editor.

BEST DRAMATIC PRESENTATION, SHORT FORM:

The Other Large Thing. May 2025. Episode 4, Season 4, Love Death + Robots. Written by me, directed by Patrick Osborne. Produced by Netflix and Blur Studios.

Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners. May 2025. Episode 9, Season 4, Love Death + Robots. Written by me, directed by Patrick Osborne. Produced by Netflix and Blur Studios.

In addition to me, the following people are also eligible for award consideration based on their engagement with my work: John Harris, Best Professional Artist (for The Shattering Peace); Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Best Editor, Long Form (for When the Moon Hits Your Eye and The Shattering Peace); John Joseph Adams, Best Editor, Short Form (for “3 Days, 9 Months, 27 Years”). Also, the anthology that “3 Days, 9 Months, 27 Years” is part of, The Time Traveler’s Passport, is eligible for Best Anthology consideration. Finally, all of Volume 4 of Love Death + Robots is eligible for consideration for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form.

(Please note that my novella Constituent Service, published in print/ebook in November 2025, is not eligible for award consideration, as it was originally published in audio in 2024. However, cover artist Tristan Elwell is eligible for Best Professional Artist, because the cover art to the print/ebook edition of the novella is original to 2025.)

I think that covers all the things I did for 2025! I mean, it’s a fair amount. If you read or watched any of it, I hope it gave you joy. And if you haven’t read or watched these things, well, that just means they’re ready for you when you’re ready to enjoy them.

I matched one of my 'why not try this' fandoms this year in Yuletide and had a lovely request for Heyer's Cotillion. I've never written Heyer fic, or any Regency romance fic unless you count the more Heyeresque parts of Bujold, but she's a longstanding favourite author and I wanted to have a go, and Cotillion is such a fun book, one of my absolute favourites of hers. And Lord Legerwood is one of Heyer's many delightfully sardonic older men and so writing his POV was tremendous fun - I had a couple of false starts trying to write something for this request, but once I started writing Lord Legerwood it all came together very smoothly. And a comedy of misunderstandings seemed very appropriate for Heyer.

By Special Licence (Heyer - Cotillion, canon pairings, epilogue, 2000 words)

To get into the spirit of the thing, as well as reading Cotillion a couple of times through I have been slowly reading through all the Heyers, partly to get the voice and also because it's always like this when I pick up one Heyer: I have to read all the other ones immediately afterwards. I haven't reread any of the Georgian ones yet because I wanted to keep my head in the Regency voice, but now that my fic is all done I will be getting to them because what can beat These Old Shades - the first Heyer I ever read, not necessarily the best place to start except of course it is the best place to start. Anyway, I have been reading through the Regencies more or less in favourite order, so I've now reached Arabella - which has many things I do love but the 'told a silly lie and now have to stick to it' trope isn't one of them. (Top ten Heyer Regencies, not in order: Frederica, Venetia, A Civil Contract, Cotillion, Friday's Child, The Nonesuch, The Foundling, The Unknown Ajax, The Reluctant Widow, Black Sheep.) But even my least favourite Heyers are still fun to reread.

And as well as what I wrote, the authors of my gifts are revealed:
[archiveofourown.org profile] morvidra wrote Happiness In Time Of Joy (Wimsey missing scenes from Busman's Honeymoon)
[archiveofourown.org profile] longwhitecoats wrote Double Exposure (long Wimsey casefic with Harriet/Peter/Bunter)
[archiveofourown.org profile] fullborn wrote Wandrers Nachtlied ('The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' Theo/Clive fic).

Thank you all very much!

My answers to today's questions at thefridayfive@DW

1. Do you mostly drink tap, filtered, or bottled water?

Only tap water.

2. Is it safe/recommended to drink tap water where you live? If not, why?

It's safe. The quality of tap water here in such that it's a given - nobody born here even thinks about it.

3. What does the tap water taste/smell like where you live?

Nothing, IMO.

4. Do you collect rainwater? If so, what do you use it for?

Nope.

5. Do you/have you ever had restrictions on water use where you live? What did you have to change about your lifestyle?

The only times tap water isn't safe to drink is when there is a temporary, local problem with some local plumbing/water supply/water treatment plant. These happen occasionally but I've never had it happen to me in my 51 years.

People still have summer cottages that are old and basic enough that they don't get municipal running water, or the running water comes from their own well in which case bottled water is needed for drinking. My Mom and her SO had a place like that for a couple of years, spent only summers there and had to haul in water for the stays. They had their own well and running water, but it could not be used for drinking or cooking, just for showering and gardening and such.

The only thing was that when I visited that Mom's and SO's summer place, I had to remember never to drink water from any faucet. And while showering, not letting water in my mouth.

In winter
    all the singing is in
      the tops of the trees
        where the wind-bird

with its white eyes
    shoves and pushes
      among the branches.
        Like any of us

he wants to go to sleep,
    but he's restless—
      he has an idea,
        and slowly it unfolds

from under his beating wings
as long as he stays awake.
But his big, round music, after all,
        is too breathy to last.

So, it's over.
    In the pine-crown
      he makes his nest,
        he's done all he can.

I don't know the name of this bird,
I only imagine his glittering beak
      tucked in a white wing
        while the clouds—

which he has summoned
    from the north—
      which he has taught
        to be mild, and silent—

thicken, and begin to fall
    into the world below
      like stars, or the feathers
        of some unimaginable bird

that loves us,
that is asleep now, and silent—
      that has turned itself
        into snow.

Yuletide Reveals: Ancient World Edition

This year, both my assignment and the treat I wrote were based on historical novels but, I hope, manage to work outside of them (while doing their canon justice). Though last year I discovered with Stella Duffy*s Theodora duology two more novels about the Byzantine Empress I liked, Gillian Bradshaw's The Bearkeeper's Daughter is still my uncontested favourite. Aside from Theodora herself, the most intriguing character in it is for me is probably Narses, so I was delighted to get an assignment where one of the recipient's prompts asked more about him, which resulted in this story:

Of What is Past (3255 words) by Selena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Bearkeeper's Daughter - Gillian Bradshaw, 6th Century CE RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Narses & Theodora, Justinian I Emperor of Byzantium/Theodora I Augusta of Byzantium, Narses & Anastasios, Narses & Belisarius, Narses & Justinian
Characters: Narses (The Bearkeeper's Daughter), Theodora I Augusta of Byzantium, Justinian I Emperor of Byzantium, Anastasios (The Bearkeeper's Daughter)
Additional Tags: Character Study, Backstory, Canon Backstory, Yuletide
Summary:

As he rises from castrated slave boy to one of the most powerful men in the Empire, Narses knows about prices - and worth.

As for my treat: It's a tough contest, but Stealing Fire (set in the aftermath of Alexander the Great's death; our hero fictional Lydias goes from suicidal traumatized soldier to starting a new life and new relationships healed survivor while teaming up with Ptolemy Soter and leading the most audacious bodynapping heist ever as he steals AtG's corpse for his boss) might be my favourite of the Numinous World novels Jo Graham wrote, though last year I via the audio version which I hadn't known before did a rehear/retread of Black Ships (based on the Aeneid, from the pov of the Sybil) and it's certainly up there. Anyway, one of the most interesting characters in the novel is Thais, a historical character, a hetaira from Athens who joined Alexander's campaign and was the long term mistress of Ptolemy with whom she had several children. Settiai had asked for more about Thais, what life with with Alexander had been like, how she reacted when Ptolemy eventually fell in love with another woman (as opoposed to political marriages), etc, and I swear I originally had more of a romantic mellow character piece in mnd. But then I actually read the ancient sources on Alexander. And thought: he must have been absolutely hell to live with at times, especially in his final years. I can't imagine a more dangerous combination than all powerful, depressed, hard drinking and already having killed friends in a rage before. Thinking this, I got an idea, and the tone of my planned story changed completely. With this result:

Her Last Confession (6796 words) by Selena
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Numinous World Series - Jo Graham, Stealing Fire - Jo Graham, Classical Greece and Rome History & Literature RPF, Ancient History RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Ptolemy I/Thais, Alexandros III of Macedon | Alexander the Great & Thais, Thais & Berenike I. of Egypt, Thais & Chloe (Stealing Fire), Alexander III of Macedon | Alexander the Great & Ptolemaios Soter | Ptolemy I of Egypt, Alexandros III of Macedon | Alexander the Great/Hephaistion of Macedon
Characters: Thaïs the Hetaira (c. 4th Century BCE), Alexandros III of Macedon | Alexander the Great, Ptolemaios Soter | Ptolemy I of Egypt, Berenike I of Egypt | Berenice, Chloe (Stealing Fire), Demosthenes (c. 384-322 BCE), Kleitos ho Melas | Cleitus the Black, Callisthenes of Olynthus
Additional Tags: Character Study, POV Female Character, Talking To Dead People, Complicated Relationships, War, Angst, Reveal, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Thais has always guarded her secrets well. It kept her alive in the years that saw her go from Athenian Hetaira to joining Alexander's campaign to conquer the world to settling down in Egypt where her lover Ptolemy became Pharaoh. But it also cost her. And now she is about to confront her past one more time...

To catch up on the past two days...

After I posted on New Years Eve, it took awhile for RK to pick us up, but he finally did, and we went to Liz G's.

It was me and [personal profile] mashfanficchick, RK, Liz G and Robyn, so only five of us, but it was a nice group. We watched the movie Wake Up Dead Man, the third in the Knives Out movies. I never saw the first two, but it wasn't necessary for this one. It was a lot of fun.

We had lasagna and mozzarella sticks before the movie, I should have said, and chips and onion dip and pigs in blankets.

Anyway after the movie we played Jackbox games on the TV.

Then at 12:00 we counted down and yelled Happy New Year, there was sparkling cider (that's non alcoholic) and of course herring in wine sauce though only [Bad username or unknown identity: :mashfanficchick"] and I had it. I called Middle Brother, and wished him Happy New Year. While we were talking the Kid called me and we talked for awhile.

The FWiB called a little later and we talked. That was nice.

Then we had ice cream sundaes and played more games. Finally RK drove us and Robyn back. We got back at around 2:40.

We stayed up longer just hanging out so I actually could have done my journal, but since I had said I would wait, I did.

Today we slept very late indeed. I woke up at 12:00 something not feeling well, and stayed up for awhile til I felt better, then went back to sleep til 3ish.

I got my coffee and puttered on the computer til [personal profile] mashfanficchick got up. Then we had bagels, the special gluten free ones the Kid made [personal profile] mashfanficchick for Christmas, with lox and cream cheese.

The rest of the day was devoted to a combination of hanging out, making chocolate, and eating. I Teamed the FWiB, for an hour and a half, and I called Middle Brother, who is fine.

Finally around 11:30 I got f=dressed (had been in my pajamas all day) and Ubered home.

And guess what!? THE DOOR IS FIXED! I had to actually use my key fob to get in! Finally after all these months of complaining and calling the city, it's fixed!

So that's my New Year's.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Friends.

3. The Kid.

4. Middle Brother.

5. The new mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

6. The lock is fixed!

Sliding in with one last [community profile] rec_cember post! Some canon divergent fics and vids I really loved reading/watching post-season 4:

End of the World Express by Electra_TUA (Electra_XT), Rated Mature, Diego/Lila/Five
In Diego’s defense, he didn’t expect the inter-dimensional terminal they were talking about to be a subway station.

The dialogue is so crisp and well-done. Scenarios with characters getting lost on the time subway is RIPE for fic. I loved the characterization of all three of them, but especially Diego, and how they all re-acquire their joy together by the end.

that would be okay by achilleees_tua, Rated Mature, Diego/Five
Six years, five months, and two days into his ill-advised solo subway adventure, Five finds a greenhouse full of strawberries.

Okay so maybe this isn't my usual ship, but I was craving even more subway fic and this fic delivers! So much introspection and even though Diego and Five know each other so well, they manage to get romantic and surprise each other.

Empty [Anniversary Video] by FanVids (JustBWilde), Lila/Five, *WARNING for fast flashing lights*

This summarizes the growth of their relationship so well. I like how the voice overs highlight how they started with white hot hatred towards each other - but then came all the way back around to hatred again with the way s4 ended. I think the main theme of the show is that time is a flat circle for Five. The tragedy of it all!!

✰Finally, this vid was posted in 2020 but it was new to me. It captures all of the Hargreeves' powers and their ride-or-die dynamic, plus the song is super fun:

I’m on vacation. Here are some past letters that I’m making new again, rather than leaving them to wilt in the archives.

1. I worked for a married couple and the husband told his wife we had an affair — but we didn’t

I quit my retail management job two years ago over work/life balance issues and started working as a private home chef for a wealthy married couple. Long story short, the wife caught the husband having an affair and rather than admit who it was with and have to stop seeing her, he lied that it was me! She fired me. He apologized to explain himself and tried to give me money, but I was furious and told him off. So I’m on my own now. I need to look for a new conventional job, but I have no idea what to say about this last position on my resume especially because I can’t get a reference from them. But if I don’t list it, then how do I account for the last two years?

What a jerk — not only cheating on his wife, but getting an innocent person fired in order to cover his tracks?

Don’t leave that entire two years off your resume! Leave it on, and if employers ask about it, you can explain the couple’s marriage imploded, you were caught in the crossfire despite being scrupulously professional, and the situation between them was so volatile that you wouldn’t suggest them as a reference. (Also, if seeking “a conventional new job” means that you’re not looking for work as a private chef, employers may not even care about contacting this couple, which will make things easier.)

Alternately, the fact that the husband offered you money might indicate he (rightly) feels guilty and might be open to other ways of trying to make you whole — like being your reference, which is the least he owes you. I know you told him off, but there could be room to contact him, say you’re having trouble finding a job because of the lie he told about you, and tell him you need him to be a reference for you for that job (which you presumably did well) or even just be willing to verify your employment so you can list it on your resume. You might not be comfortable doing that, but it’s an option to throw in the mix too. As is having a lawyer explain defamation to this couple, if you want to go that route.

2020

2. Why are you asking me to do that?

I am a mid-level HR director and routinely receive questions well outside the scope of my role. I understand that HR can end up being the catch-all for a lot of situations; however, I am not the team party planner, I do not know how to fix your IT issue, schedule your own meeting, etc.! My company views HR as a very strategic group, so I feel supported in my want to push back (and am in line with our culture) but I keep receiving requests well outside of/beneath my role. Clearly, some of this frustration stems from the fact that a lot of these questions treat me as a glorified admin or are individuals just trying to pass on the problem to someone else, but I am at a loss at how to respond effectively. Often, some of these questions are so out of my realm, I don’t even know who they should have asked in the first place.

Obviously, I don’t want to set the tone of being completely unhelpful and risk employees not reaching out in the future, but I am not hitting the correct balance of how to effectively communicate that. Perhaps, if I were in another department, I would feel more comfortable to respond in increasingly blunt versions of “this question is better directed to someone else, apologies!” to “why on earth did you ask me that?” However, in HR, I want to maintain a level of respect and trust with my teams. Any suggestions on how to better respond to and redirect these inquiries?

You can be pretty blunt about it and still use a warm, cheerful tone! Things you can say cheerfully:

* “Oh, we don’t plan parties! Your team would handle that themselves.”
* “That’s something IT would help with — unless there’s some HR angle that I’m missing?” (That piece at the end can be appended to some of these others too, to make a point in a polite way.)
* “We don’t handle meeting scheduling; that’s something you or your team would do.”
* “Hmmm, that’s not our realm! Normally I’d try to steer you in the right direction, but that’s so separate from what we do that I’m not sure who to point you toward.”

As long as you’re warm and friendly when people interact with you, you’re not going to lose their trust for setting clear boundaries on what you do and don’t do.

3. My coworker borrowed my laptop … permanently

About a year ago, my coworker’s husband was hit by car in a hit and run accident. It was a serious injury and he couldn’t use one arm for weeks. My coworker suddenly needed to work from home so she could be there to help him, and her Mac computer was not compatible with our systems.

I own a desktop and laptop computer, and so I offered to loan her my personal laptop. But for some reason my coworker seems to think it was a gift rather than a loan.

Our manager is my coworker’s cousin, and it was the manager I originally offered the laptop to as a solution for the immediate need. When I’ve asked the manager about getting my laptop back, she’s told me she would talk to her boss and see what he wants to do. Perhaps she meant he would get my coworker a replacement, but whether she returns my laptop shouldn’t be up to him. The company is struggling now and has just cut our salaries 25%, so that is not going to be an option.

I am now considering leaving the company due to the salary cuts, or the possibility of being laid off. I might need to be able to do video interviews or meetings. I also want the option of being flexible where I work. How do I go about getting my laptop back?

There’s no need to dance around it like this! Contact your coworker directly and say, “I’ve been happy to loan you my laptop over the past year, but I’ll need it back soon. Can you plan to return it to me no later than (date)?” (I’d give her 1-2 weeks so she has time to make other arrangements.) If she says she didn’t realize it was a loan, then say, “I had always intended it as a loan. I definitely can’t afford to just give away a laptop!”

Since your manager seems to have the impression that she now gets to be involved in this too, loop her in as well — “Just FYI, it’s now been a year and I can’t continue to keep my personal laptop loaned out, so I’m letting Jane know I’ll need it back by (date).”

From there, it’s up to your company to figure out how to provide your coworker with a computer. But it doesn’t get to commandeer yours just because you were nice enough to do everyone involved a favor. You get to decide what you’re offering and for how long, and a year is already way above and beyond.

Read an update to this letter here.

4. How do I politely end professional phone calls?

This question seems so simple, but it stumps me a few times a day. How do I get off the phone on a professional call, when there is nothing else to talk about or when I have to go? I’m a divorce lawyer, so the subject matter is very emotional and personal and relationships are key. It is important that my clients know I’m listening and that I care. I spend a lot of time on the phone with clients each day, asking or answering questions and relying information. We start off with an agenda, but then we get through what we have to get through … and then what? It’s often painful awkwardness. I find myself saying something that feels really clumsy, like “well, that’s it” or “okay, I’ll keep you posted” – which, duh, of course I will.

I guess I don’t really have a better answer in my personal life, and usually just conclude calls with “I’ll let you go,” which is the universal signal that you are done talking on the phone. But, that doesn’t work professionally. There is obviously a simple answer here, but I can’t figure out what it is. What are the magic words?

Actually, the way you’re doing it — with something like “okay, I’ll keep you posted” — is fine. You just need to say it confidently rather then feeling awkward about it. But some other options are:

* “Okay, I’ve got everything I need. Thanks for your time, and I’ll be in touch soon.”
* “Well, I should be back in touch with you in about two weeks when X happens.” (Wait for response.) “Talk to you then, and take care.”
* “I’ve got to run to a meeting, but I hope this helped and we’ll talk soon.”
* “I think that’s it for today! It was good talking with you.”
* “Is there anything else we should cover before we wrap up?”
* “It’s been good talking. Let’s plan to touch base next week.”

Snowflake Challenge #1

[personal profile] snickfic
two log cabins with snow on the roofs in a wintery forest the text snowflake challenge january 1 - 31 in white cursive text

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

For those unsure what the heck the Snowflake Challenge is, it's a DW event through the month of January where they post a prompt every other day on [community profile] snowflake_challenge, and you can respond on your journal to whichever ones you want, at your leisure. (If that's unclear or you're curious for more details, feel free to ask me. I was very confused for a long time about how it worked.)

Anyway! Hi, I'm snick. I'm a fandom old who came to fandom via Buffy the Vampire Slayer a bit after the show had ended. My fannish evolution was something like:
1. Got into Buffy fandom, made my first fandom friends, wrote my first fanfic
2. Got into Supernatural, discovered kink memes, wrote my first porn
3. Got into hockey RPF, learned how to write. As mentioned above, I wrote before that, some that I'm still very proud of, but I feel like I really came of age as a writer in hockey fandom.

Since then I've spent time in the MCU, I got more into horror movies and sometimes into their fandoms, and I got into the band Oasis and have written a bunch of fic about that. I also got more and more into multi-fandom exchanges as a way to fill in the gaps (with mixed success) when I kept getting into smaller, less active fandoms.

These days, this journal is mostly for movie and book reviews and locked personal posts, but I do occasionally post unlocked about my writing or fannish events, that kind of thing. Every so often I even post news or meta about my fandoms, although that doesn't feel like what people do here on DW anymore, alas.

And to answer the other question, I'm doing the Snowflake Challenge because I really like seeing more activity on DW. I'm hoping for some prompts this year that will give me excuses to write about fandom stuff I'm excited about, which as mentioned above I rarely get around to doing. And I look forward to reading everyone else's posts and hopefully interacting with them more. <3

Here are my answers to this week's Friday Five!

1. Do you mostly drink tap, filtered, or bottled water?

At home, filtered, always. When out and about, I try to have a reusable water bottle with me, or ask for filtered water at restaurants, but sometimes I am forced to buy bottled water.

2. Is it safe/recommended to drink tap water where you live? If not, why?

Nope! I live in a developing country and while the water where I live is decent quality, it's still not potable. Most people use some kind of water filtration/purification system, or buy purified water from commercial vendors.

3. What does the tap water taste/smell like where you live?

Neutral, with a slight hint of chlorine from the purification process if it's from the municipal supply. I'm lucky to live somewhere with excellent groundwater.

4. Do you collect rainwater? If so, what do you use it for?

Rainwater harvesting is done by the municipality here and is standard. (I live somewhere prone to droughts.) It's used to replenish the water table.

5. Do you/have you ever had restrictions on water use where you live? What did you have to change about your lifestyle?

I have been lucky enough to never have had restrictions on water use, because my building has a borewell, so we were almost never dependent on municipal water supplies. There was a period of time where we supplemented the water from the borewell buy buying water commercially, but the thing with living in a drought city is that you're naturally careful about water use - to this day, I only take Navy-style showers, and have a deep and abiding hatred for golf courses. (Seriously, they should not exist in climes drier than Scotland. Why the fuck are there so many in Arizona?!) Seeing California ideas of 'restricted' water usage after growing up with people lining up to fill pots when the water tanker came was a trip, let me tell you.
