It's 2023! Here's hoping it treats everyone better than 2022 did!

It's back to work today, but it's a time and a half day, so I shall deal with whatever is to come. My coworker J is still out, so I've got his markets and mine to do, but that shouldn't take too long. Then, of course wherever my manager decides to fling me to put out fires. I have a feeling it's going to be a busy day, still probably on a skeleton crew.

Fortunately, afterwards, I shall have gametime! Two years ago, on New Year's Day, we started playing a game of D&D. It was my first game of D&D, though I had already been running Monster of the Week for a couple of months. It's a module called Rime of the Frostmaiden, and I felt woefully unprepared. We'd run a short session 0 the week before, but only a few people could make it, so I was going in cold with most of my party. The first session was a little slow, as we all got used to each other and figured out things about Roll20, the virtual tabletop we use. But by the end of the game, I was hooked. By the end of three hours, I was hooked. I was still figuring out my GM style, probably trying to hard to be Alex Newall or Griffin McElroy. (Trying to be Brennen Lee Mulligan or Matt Mercer came later.) But still, we got there. And slowly, a story began to emerge. It bears little resemblance to the module as written, with whole plot lines excised or added. I like to think we've made it our own. Characters without a line in the module have become hated adversaries, and other throwaway characters into trusted friends.

And through it all, I've made friends. I've gotten to know a bunch of wonderful people. Fandom can be a crazy place, but it can be awesome, too. (The server was born out of the fandom con, Con.Txt.) And I've grown along the way. Being a DM is awesome, but it can be like herding cats. My leadership skills have definitely improved some, and I'm much more willing to speak my mind.

Okay, I suppose I need to get myself together for work. Wishing everyone a very happy new year and hoping for the brightest and best year for all of ux!
