beansideOn Tuesday night, I finally heard St. Anger. I'll admit it, my first thought was "what the fuck is that abortion of a song?" But really, that's not fair to it. It had some good stuff going for it, too.
So, let's break it down, shall we? What makes a song? Rhythm, melody, lyrics, guitar riifs, vocals and production.
Rhythm: Was there a bass line though 90% of this? Not that I could tell. Lars' drums sounded muffled, almost not there. Grade:D
Melody: Okay, this is where there's a problem with the grade. See, the song is 8 minutes, but it swings wildly in tempo and melody. The first half of the song isn't exactly my idea of fun. Too wibbly. The second half picks up, though, and I actually like it. So, a split grade is in order. Grade: C-/B+
Lyrics: James, what the fuck? One of Met's greatest attributes has always been James ability to convey feeling, without tying down the song to one meaning. This doesn't have that. At all. It's about your anger taking over you and your life, and that's it. No deeper meanings. It's got some wonderful turns of phrase ("I'm madly in anger with you") but over all, kinda eh. Again, the second half is better than the first. Grade: B-
Guitar Riffs: Kirk is a god. That is all. Fucking awesome guitar work, as always. I'm horribly biased. Grade: A
Vocals: Split grade here. First half, very wobbly and kinda whiny. Second half, harder edged, and well defined. Grade: C-/B+
Production: Manages to sound at once over produced and yet still like a demo. What the fuck? Bob, were you asleep? This could have been such a cool song, if you'd done your goddamn job. Instead, we're left with a whole load of what could have beens. I'm just hoping that the DVD isn't overproduced, too. Grade: D.
