It's 2022! Happy New Years! May you all find peace, health and joy this year.
I, being me, was asleep long before the ball dropped on the year. I didn't even wake up for the inevitable fireworks, or if I did, it was in an ambien haze, and I don't remember a thing. I love my ambien, as I love to get to sleep most nights, but sometimes the memory loss thing is a little disconcerting. I've had full conversations with Jess that I don't remember the next morning.
We had a moderately busy day, as I went to Walmart early to get groceries, and then we all sat around lamenting the fact that we had no appetizers as is our tradition for NYE. So, it was off to the hellscape that is Trader Joe's parking lot to get some. It was busy, but not impossible, so we got out with some tasty treats.
We cooked them early for dinner, and ate our fill of puff pastry filled with feta cheese and caramelized onions (so good, wish I had gotten two of them), flatbread with arugula, burrata and prosciutto (pretty tasty) beef en croute (pretty okay) and brown sugar glazed bacon wrapped scallops (always amazing-I wait for those fuckers every holiday season). By the end we were all stuffed and happy, and tradition had been upheld.
Of course, 2021 had to give us one last kick in the teeth as Betty White passed. I found myself affected by all the tributes, maybe because Golden Girls was a popular show in this house. I'm glad that she knew how beloved she was before she passed. Really, can you say anything better than that she lived a life well enough that people mourned that 99 years just wasn't enough?
Today is the one year anniversary of our D&D game, Rime of the Frostmaiden. As always, I'm looking forward to the game and seeing what I can throw at our heroes. Will they finally get around to doing the lake monster plot hook that they got in session 1 or 2? Maybe? Maybe not? We're on session 26, I believe, which is pretty amazing.
I wouldn't have bet that I'd be running 4 games in the new year, but here I am. I don't regret a single one. Since I don't seem to be able to write fic at the moment, it's the creative outlet I need. I can't write a full fic, but I can write out a story idea and flesh it out into a session. I can make modifications to the existing modules as my players go off script. I can talk about the game on Discord and with Jess (never giving any spoilers, mind you.) It gives me social interaction with people I like who aren't my family. And best of all, it gives me something to look forward to every couple of weeks. I love working from home, but it does make things sort of monotonous, so I need that break from routine.
And my group is so awesome. On various social media sites, I see all these horror stories about how their games have been upended by a shitty player, and I'm so grateful that my group isn't like that. They're kind, supportive, and generous and let everyone have a chance to shine. Everyone is just there to have fun and not to "win" at D&D. It makes a huge difference.
Okay, enough babbling. More coffee, then maybe a shower. I hope everyone has a good first day of the new year!
