I have an odd relationship with Christmas. On one hand, I'm pagan, but on the other, it's a big thing to my family. And, after the year we had, it was a nice day to sit down and enjoy another Christmas with Grandmom.

Hell, I didn't think she was gonna make it to last Christmas, so to still have her here is kinda amazing. Shelly and I convinced her that we wouldn't drop her, so she let us lift her into the chair (yeah. I'll pay for that tomorrow, but it's worth it.) so she came out of her bedroom for the first time since she got back from the hospital, and sat and opened her presents and had breakfast with the family. It was kind of awesome, and it totally made Mom's day.

The nurse was here yesterday to check her, and couldn't believe that her lungs sounded so good, since Tuesday of last week, she was asking us if we'd considered hospice. She's like the fricking Energizer bunny, I swear.

Normally, by this time on Christmas, I want to smack someone, but this year...it felt like what I think Christmas is supposed to. Family, and love, and just enjoying each other.

Now, we're watching the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD and waiting for the apple pie to finish baking. Then, I believe it will be an early night for me. *nod*

I'm glad you got to spend an awesome Christmas with your Grandma. Really, what's better than that?

So many Yule traditions were 'borrowed' for Christmas, that it's easy for me to enjoy Christmas with friends while still holding to my own beliefs.

*hugs* So glad your Grandmom is doing better!

And I completely understand having an odd relationship with Christmas. I, too, am pagan, yet I was brought up Catholic, so it leaves me feeling strange celebrating at times.

This time of year, I celebrate two holidays. December 24th I go and celebrate 'Christian Christmas' where I go to church and see a beautifully decorated church, watch children dress up like angels and furries, and sing carols about babies in mangers. On December 25th, I celebrate 'Secular Christmas' which involves opening of presents left under a large evergreen tree and more or less giving in to the demands of materialism. They happen right around the same time of year sure.. but then so does Hanukkah.

Being a Pagan christmas means very little to me, but my folks do celebrate it, so I always join them for one day to chat, eat and have a good time.

On the 21rd of December I watched the Midwinter Solstice at Newgrange in Ireland. Each year they broadcast it live online and I was lucky enough to catch it this year. It was beautiful and really touching. I've promised myself to someday go there to witness it in person.

I'm really glad to hear how well your Grandmom is doing! She sounds like a tough old lady.
