Well that was a loong fucking day. Got there at 7, and was second to test for the practical. That sonofabitch was hard. I didn't do as well as I hoped, but I passed. I got hung up on a couple of the addresses, as I was putting in Fire Dept instead of FD and HSCO instead of HCSO. Both of which were rookie mistakes. I was nervous and it showed. I also remembered where the tow log was, and then promptly thought I'd done it wrong. Go team me. But as I said, I passed, so I'm okay with it. Then, I had four hours to sit in a little room sequestered from the incoming people. I had other people in there, so it wasn't that bad, but god, we were all bored. We finished by 11:30, and our trainer bought us pizza for lunch.
Then, directly after lunch, it was time for the test. I missed 2.5 questions, for a total score of 95%! I was really happy with that one. It wasn't as hard as I was afraid. Actually for the most part, it was really easy. I breezed through it. Sure, at least twice, I confidently put the wrong answer, but hey, I did overall well, so I'm good with it. I don't have my final score yet, since that needs to be calculated. But I did relatively well, and probably finished with an A. Hopefully, I'll get my dispatcher number today or tomorrow. It would be sily to send us out without it.
When I told people that I passed, almost all of them said a variation of "Well, duh? The only one who thought you wouldn't was you." And it's not like I don't know that I'm kinda hard on myself, but maybe I should have a little more faith? I'll try at least. I don't know how successful I'll be, but maybe, just maybe, y'all have a point.
I don't know how many of you have read the Bloggess' books. But in her second, she discusses how she was trying to record the first audiobook, and totally bombing at it. So on a break, she sent Neil Gaiman a message saying "what do I do?" And his reply was simple and brilliant, and I think I want a tattoo of it. "Pretend you're good at it." So, I think for the next section of my training, I'm going to pretend that I'm good at it, and hopefully good will follow.
