Friday freeedom! Except that we have some errands today. Gotta go up and get our Real ID, which is always fun. Gotta go to Trader Joes and pick up some appetizers to nibble on NYE. I have to work on New Years Day, so we won't be seeing the ball drop, but it's tradition to get appetizers for the evening. Then, we have a game, the conclusion of Too Many Draculas, tonight.
Honestly, I'm just happy not to be at work today. The OT was denied, and frankly, I'm kind of glad. Yesterday was insane enough without doing it another day. So first of all, we had a total of ten people in the office. Four were the delivery updates team (including me). That left six people to cover five departments. Then, the call center's phones went down for 8 hours. Which meant that our transport companies could call in to report not at home customers. So they all got emailed. our inbox exploded, and people had to be diverted to work on that. In the meantime, the inventory report is stacking up, because only one (very slow) person is working them. With all three people (plus one extra) there to do the updates, I jumped into Inventory because I'm actually cross trained in all the depts. I got it down to one in thirty minutes. Then, I went back to updates.
At this point, I realize that the dude who was asked to do the inbox has stopped doing it. He says that he was under the impression that he was just supposed to clean out yesterday's leftover emails. I think he just didn't want to do it, but oh well. I let my manager know and divert my extra person to the inbox, and he fights the losing battle.
Around this time, the OT request gets formally denied, and manager begins to panic a little. We get on a call with the two people who will be here tomorrow and Saturday, and start explaining how to find the order numbers in the email, so they can at least manually do some of the updates. One of them understands and is good, but the other, B goes off on this long rant about how she's been asking to be trained on how to run the updates, and we wouldn't have this problem if we'd done it. To be fair, she's right. We should have trained someone by now. On the other hand, while she's a perfectly lovely person, she's also not that bright, and has no understanding of Excel. My poor manager, who is not paid enough for this, tried to soothe her, and redirect her back to the problem at hand, but she just snippily said "Is there anything else?" He said no, and told her she could leave the call, but he had a couple more things to go over with the other woman and I. Y'all, she wouldn't disconnect! Just muted herself, like maybe we'd think she had gone away? He finally had to end the call and then call us back. Apparently, she continued to be pissed and fuss to everyone around her.
He calls me back, and we figure out a game plan. (Spoiler, it's a shitty game plan.). It amounts to "well, we're fucked for this weekend, guess we'll be figuring it out on Sunday. Find some busy work for B for tomorrow, since she's off on Saturday anyway." So,I pulled the 4pm run and gave it to her. It was 255 orders and she's not exactly lightning, so it'll probably take her most of today.
I then throw the rest of my team at the inbox, in hopes that it'll help. Then, finally, I go home exhausted, and wondering if I really, really want to be a team lead.
I'm tempted to boot up my computer just to see how many emails are in the inbox. The phones apparently came back on around 5:30, so hopefully, they slowed down. But when I left it was 55 and climbing. Since there's only 6 people this weekend, things are likely to be buckwild when we come in on Sunday.
Oh, and kicker? My manager wants me to try to train B on pulling the updates. Holy shit, this is going to be bad.
So, I am going to enjoy my two days of freedom, and remind myself that Sunday will be time and a half for the holiday.
Okay, time for more coffee. Everyone have a wonderful Friday!
