Day three of being an adult! Just today and part of tomorrow to go until the sister returns from her vacation! I'm really looking forward to being in my own bed on Monday night. Her bed is perfectly comfortable, I just want my own bed back, where I can sleep with Jess. This sleeping solo shit is annoying.
From the pictures she's sending, the sister is having a wonderful time, so that's awesome. I want her to have fun. Hopefully, she'll come back all refreshed. I know our vacation was very good for that. Had we not come home to euthanize Sam the same day, we would have probably been more relaxed after ours.
Yesterday was a dreary, rainy day, and I could have slept my way through most of it. Instead, I got my shit together and went out and got the good Chinese food from the hole in a wall in Rosedale, Asian Bistro Express. We ordered so much food, figuring on it being lunch and dinner. I should have remembered that their lunch portion is enough for two meals. I'm not mad about having extra for lunch today. Most of their stuff reheats really well.
Most of the day, though was devoted to D&D. The morning was spent prepping my session 0 checklist. It's a document that I like to go over during the first session, just telling players what to expect from the game, and the safety protocols should the story tread too close to something triggering. I don't expect that to be a problem with this game, but it's always good to put it out there. I rewrite the checklist for each game, answering the same questions based on the nature of the game, so I will be doing it again in two weeks for Strahd. I may actually start early for Strahd, since it deals with more complex themes and potentially triggery material.
Then, after a long day of waiting, it was time for D&D! This was the first of two new games, The Lost Mine of Phandelver. I had two new people at the table, so I was a little nervous, but I think it went pretty well overall.
We started our adventure in the Waterdeep Bean Depot, where Gundren Rockseeker was looking for adventurers to guard and drive his wagons on the two day journey to Phandalin. He and his bodyguard Sildar Halfwinter would leave that very night, with the wagons following the next morning. The party was hired, and the next morning they set out. The first day passed uneventfully, but when they camped for the evening, inept bandits attacked. There were only three of them, which was dumb against a party of 8, but they thought that hiding in the bushes and shooting a few arrows would intimidate the party. The Peace Domain cleric attempted to negotiate, but the Genasi Fighter returned fire, hitting the leader. Seeing that this was a potentially fighty party, the other two melted into the shadows and ran. Injured, the leader was captured and tied up to be taken with them to Phandalin.
The next day, only a few miles outside of Phandalin, the party came upon a grizzly scene. Two horses lay dead in the road. The horses belonging to their patron and his bodyguard! On an incredibly good perception roll by the Genasi Fighter, the party was not surprised by the goblin ambush. A short fight ensued! The party took some damage, but was triumphant, despite being level 1 squishy. The hobgoblin Barbarian had the foresight to knock out one of the goblins, so they questioned him, and found that the dwarf had been taken to the castle, but he wasn't sure where that was exactly, but the bodyguard was being kept in the "eating room" at their hideout. They also discussed that the orders to kidnap Gundren had come from the "Black Dragon." He didn't have anymore information about said Black Dragon, just that they were important. The party discussed the options available, and eventually decided to hide the wagons, and proceed to the goblin's hideout. We stopped the session there, as it was nearing 7 and people other than us probably had shit to do.
Now, I have to wait 6 whole days for more D&D! Next weekend is a three game weekend. Frostmaiden on Friday, the conclusion of the Graveyard Shift one shot on Saturday and Witchlight on Sunday!
Today, though, it's back to work. Ew. Everyone have a good Sunday!
