I've had two days to decide what it was about Kill Bill that annoyed me. I've come to the conclusion that it was a combination of everything.
First off, the style just drove me batshit. I appreciate wanting to show things out of order, in flashbacks, etc. However, the way he went about doing it, with chapter numbers and titles for each segment...I found it jarring, enough to bring me out of the movie. Next up was the fact that in grand samurai tradition, we are not to know our protagonist's name. Cool, that works. Except that it didn't. He had the other characters say her name, but it was bleeped out with an annoying sound effect. This first happened during the first big scene with one of the people who had "done her wrong." I thought someone's cell phone was going off. It wasn't until it happened again that I realized Quentin was doing it. Again, it completely threw me, knocked me right out of a scene that up until then was pretty damned cool.
The anime sequence was well done, though again, kind of jarring to switch from live action to anime.
The big fight scene switched styles three times, with no actual reason behind it. Started out color, went black and white, and finished with a silhouetted fight on a blue grid background. The fuck.
*sigh* Then, we're on to the content. Arms, legs and heads are all whacked off, with an accompanying arterial spray. It got old fast. Gore is one thing, but this was so frequent that it got boring.
The next thing that bothered me is kind of a plot point, so I will put it behind a cut, to spare those who don't want to be ( spoiled. )
I don't squick easily (hell, I was on Tallific!), but that had me just disgusted. And it served no purpose other than skull-fucking. (For the non-fanfic people on my friends list, that's something put in a story to show how "sick" or "weird" you can be--not necessarily actual skull-fucking.)
The soundtrack was regularly painful and completely out of sync with the movie. (i.e., a Spanish guitar while they're fighting in an Oriental garden.) There were a lot of siren-ish sound effects, as well as an extended flute piece that just hurt.
So...does this mean I hated every moment of this movie? No. There were a lot of really cool concepts that I enjoyed. I like the revenge theme, and there are some interesting insights on it in here. Uma managed to look hot a few times, and she did a nice job with a tough role. Lucy Liu was exceptionally hot, and very cool as the crime lord/bitch Oren. Darryl Hannah is great during her limited onscreen time, and should I ever watch Volume 2, she and David Carradine will be the reason. And best of all was the young Japanese actress who played Gogo. Absolutely batshit insane, and a hell of an asskicker.
The opening scene is so very good, and so cool that I really had hopes for this one, but it didn't happen, and that was the worst of it.
Overall, I came out of it frustrated, and annoyed with the potential that I thought was utterly wasted.
