Here's how I read it: beanside never wrote this as an example of ideal caregiving. Nobody HAS an example of ideal caregiving. Everybody comes into it with their own issues. Yes, Jeff really overreacted here, mostly because of past issues that are coming up in future chapters. Does that excuse it? No. Was he acting like a jerk? Probably. Is he a jerk? No, not as far as I see it.
