I get that; when I first started writing, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was a WAY more structured writer, too...but for me, the more detailed I get with the outline, the harder it is to then go and WRITE the story, because I feel like, "Well, I did that already!" It's a hard fucking line to walk, though; having ENOUGH structure that it doesn't all fall apart, but not so much that I just don't get it done. I'm not sure what kind of gardener that makes me. Probably one of the ones with the low maintenance plants that only have to be trimmed back once in a while, in lieu of a lawn. :D

Out of those two choices, characters. But a lot of times, I don't start with either. It's usually a line of dialogue or a scene, though. For instance, in Of Bastard Saints, we started with the scene in the graveyard when they reunited. We had a image of Dean snapping back to himself to come to Sam's aid. It grew from there.
